If anyone sees one for sale, I need one. Mine's starting to bubble a little, and I think that's probably too late to try to just grind and repaint. I took off my rear surround to fetch an LED license plate bulb that accidentally fell behind there, and noticed the bubbling.

So, local guys (midwest) if you could keep your eyes peeled that would be awesome.

what makes you say it's too late to grind and paint?

i'm just curious because I had a few spots around the car, and of course the trunk as well. I just did the 'ol coca-cola trick prior to spot glaze to be sure it was all taken care of. Although, it wouldn't be the worst if it does come back on me.

what products are needed to prep aluminum correctly then?

Saw a few on ebay but not in your state.2 in texas, one in illinois and one in south carolina.

Hey, Pec---

I, too, have noticed a little bubbling at the edge of the LP surround on my trunk lid. But a search suggests that a different lid will cost between $250 and $750 and you might well have to paint anyway. Match that cost against the small extra hassle of prepping aluminum and I came to the conclusion that it's a no-brainer for me. After you sand, use a little aluminum Jelly to remove all the corrosion. And your local paint supply will have something specific to use as the prep material. JMO

it hard to grind aluminium and Repaint because aluminium need a specific preparation to avoid aluminum oxidation

It is easier to grind the aluminum oxidation than rust from steel.

the process is exactly the same as working with steel, etching primer and bondo does the job just fine.

dont be afraid to work it, if you F it up, then buy a new one.

There's no way I can do a proper tricoat, so I'm just gonna bring it to the body shop and see what the cost differential is between repair or replace.

Dunno if it's from the weather or not. Didn't even know aluminum could oxidize. I'll go grab a pic.
i'm thinking it must have something to do with the weather, my cousin knows three other people around him (alabama) and none of them have this issue, however both of mine has and about 7 or 8 of the 10 LS's i have worked on this year has also. or it could just be one hell of a coincidence.

even weirder is that they always seem to be in the same place, just to the left and toward the top of the surround, however mine has started a second spot near the key hole.

my 1st gen was the same color, the front and rear bumpers where both replaced and repainted (at different times by different places) and they got it close, but on a sunny day you could always tell.

Mine is at the keyhole, and at the bottom of the trunk lid to the right of the surround. Also on the bottom inside of the trunk lid by the left side of the surround.

Pics coming quick.

I hear that. My hood got repainted a while back. Same thing. Although I can always tell no matter the light. But I'm VERY picky when it comes to my paint.

im kinda curious how many of the other LS's from your guy's huge meets also have this issue, do they use a lot of salt on your roads as well

Here we go. The car hasn't been washed for a few days. Not for the weak stomached:

Yes, lots of salt this year. I keep kicking myself for driving the LS when I have the truck.

there has been one forsale on st. louis cragslist for a while pete. Its blocked here so I can't get you a link....and we have less salt down here.

Pete, I am having some of the same issues. Under the rear surround, saw it this weekend and I have had some issues under the rear surround also. Just touched it up a couple years ago and have not had the surround off since then.

I will keep my eyes open for a trunk lid. PM me your cell phone # in case I find one while searching recyclers.

Just stopped by the body shop. 325 to repair/repaint the trunk lid, and to repaint the rear surround. There are no guarantees on painting over chrome, so it was not covered (which I expected anyways.)

Looks like that's the way I'll go. The body shop guy warned me a little about buying another used lid, as it could have the same issues anyways.

Thanks for the help guys. Gonna get it scheduled very soon.
