New owner of 1995 mark viii lsc. Very interested in doing exhaust. I understand that mufflers and sound is all personal preference, but I'm trying to figure out what mufflers and X crossover work the best for installation and will work not the mark viii. Im trying to spend least as possible but still want good quality. I was thinking either dynomax race bullets or maybe magnaflow. Also I would like to remove the 3rd cat with x, (is the resonator the same as the 3rd cat?) would it be cheaper to go to a local exhaust shop for them to make me an X shape exhaust? Or to buy something online.

Also is removing the 3rd cat/resonator risky? Will it screw with my computer? I would love any input and knowledge.

Welcome aboard and congrats on the new whip!

Their are a number of things one can do to improve the exhaust note on the Mark. The best research you could probably do is to search on YouTube for "Mark VIII exhaust" to listen to the many different clips and the sounds offered by using various combinations. A few of us have gone with TruBendz, a company that manufactures catback exhaust tubing for different whips including the Mark VIII.

Here is their Mark VIII section on Ebay

These pipes are usually used in tandem with 1 or 2 of this X-Pipe, but recently Trubendz starting including a similiar, if not the exact same X-Pipe in their kits. It may require a little tweaking since it doesn't exactly clear the pumpkin all to well as it is, but apart from that it is a great cost effective upgrade to consider.

Others have also gotten great sounds using a Magnaflow or Dynomax 2½" dual in/out muffler in place of the 3rd cat/resonator

Many options to choose from!! Good luck!!

So when people replace the 3rd cat with dynomax mufflers they aren't replacing it with a x crossover? and just running straight pipes until it gets to the dynomax mufflers????

Welcome, fellow Orlando member!

What's your car look like? Wonder if I've seen it around. I keep seeing one around my work every so often.

Anyway, it's a matter of preference when it comes to sound. Cutting off the 3rd cat won't do anything. You should only have two O2's, and nothing downstream, so there's nothing to worry about. For a while, I had my exhaust chopped off right after the center support and had turn downs. She sounded MEAN but it wasn't very pleasant after a really long day of work, having a headache and it's roaring THAT loud (to the point that you can't hear someone talk in the car LOL).

Now, I have mid double X pipes with 2.5" cat back and mufflers from Geno at Lincoln Motorsports. I think it's the perfect sound, just wish there was a little more "growl" to it. I purchased some KOOK headers off a member on the Facebook marketplace that'll be going on hopefully by the end of this year. That should really open her up.

I have some videos on YouTube that give a general idea of the sound, if you want some references. https://www.youtube.com/user/JBelcourt7/videos

The ones from 4 months ago or newer are with the new exhaust. The older ones are when I had it chopped off.

Did you lose back pressure by just cutting it off? And did you feel more power when you put mufflers back on?

I don't think you lose back pressure, and that's a controversial subject as to exhaust and back pressure. Some argue that makes no sense, you don't need back pressure. Anyway, it's hard to say if I felt any power or not because I chipped it around the time I did the exhaust.

Well do you think the chip did anything power wise?

Shift pattern changed, for one. It's a killer tune. It was a long time strip racer who tuned it for another member who ended up never using it. Sat for 7 years in a box, guy decided to get rid of it. I don't know everything about the exact tune, but I did talk to the original tune and other members who know him say his stack up with the best.
