Hi everyone,

I have always admired the Continental and in fact came close to buying a new one back around '99 but they were a bit too pricey for me. Recently however, I have found a used one that seems to be in very good shape inside and out (silver ext, gray int). There are a few concerns/questions that I have though as I am not at all familiar with the specifics of this model.

1. The car drives great and drove for 30 or so miles without incident. I then stopped at a friend's house and let it idle (a hot day) for about 15 minutes and when I drove off I got the "check steering assist" message and the steering was difficult. It disappeared on the next key cycle and did not reappear in the next 50 or so miles. I have read here that there may be several causes for this. Should this scare me off from buying the car? Can a mechanic definitively diagnose the cause?

2. The turn signal blinks somewhat erratically, four or five times normal speed and then a few times faster and then back to normal speed and then it speeds up for a few blinks, etc. It doesn't bother me that much unless it might indicate a problem somewhere.

3. The sunroof opens and closes but as it gets to the end of the close cycle it slows down quite a bit. Could that be a matter of just greasing something?

4. In the steering modes I can feel no difference at all between the easy, normal and hard selections. I drove a Town Car that had the selectable steering and I could easily feel a difference there. Any ideas here? Related to the "check steering assist" message?

5. What is that rectangle in the headliner in the center above the rear seats? It looks like a DVD player or something is supposed to pop down there but there appears to be nothing up there. The sales guy didn't know what it was and pushed up on it and one side kind of pushed up and it looks like it just is a panel that fills a rectangular hole.

The car has 113,xxx miles and I can get it for $3800 plus tax, etc. Your input is sincerely appreciated. Thanks. Terry.

Sounds to me like a low battery and or alternator on its way out. When my alternator was dying it was under charging my battery causing slower windows, check steering assist etc... I should have but didn't look harder at the alt since it was only a year old, instead replaced the battery. Temporarily fixing the problem until my alt killed it too. BTW have a alt tested with and without load on it when you buy one. Anyways after replacing the alt and bat everything was fine. I notice a differnce between the different modes of steering you may not due to the check steering assist, which disables power steering. And even when its on may be working improperly if voltage output is low.

Thanks purelux, I will pass that on to the dealership (Buick/GMC) that will be checking it out. I'm sure their experience with this car's tech features are very limited. Doesn't running the "system check" in the info center check the electrical system for proper voltage?

The system check does but it's certainly not as reliable as a voltmeter. It acts sorta wonky when you have a half-dead battery.

1) The steering thing seems a little weird, might be an expensive fix. Check that you have power steering fluid or for leaks first.

2) That could be an intermittent bulb or a loose connection. The blinkers speed up when the bulb is dead or not connected.

3) I dunno anything about sunroofs, your guess is as good as mine, I never liked them they just seem like a pain.

4) I never could tell much of a difference on my Mark VIII either.

5) no idea, I don't have a Conti. Look for pictures around the web, do a google image search or maybe someone else here even has a pic of their interior. Maybe somebody had something they set up there or maybe there is another dome light in the back? You'll have to look around.

See if you can find another conti and test drive that too just to compare all this stuff.

the rectangle part is for the sunroof motor access panel..the sunroof at the last o'say 3-4 " is going to move alittle slower then the rest of the movement.

and i agree with breantalan about the loose bulb connection.

Thanks - that's a pretty good sized access panel, I hope they weren't expecting problems...
