So i went to start my car today (first cold day -3 degrees) and it wouldnt start..tried 3 times then finally got it to go...is this just a sign i may need a new battery?

Was the starter weak and slowly turning the engine over? Did the gauges cycle up and down? If yes, then your battery is probably the problem. How old is it?

On the other hand, if the starter turned at the normal speed but the engine wouldn't fire up, it's probably something else. If you have a gen I, then the IAC should be a suspect. Also, it could be the fuel pump.

It can be.

Or it can be something else...more info please.

If the battery is more than two years old it is most likely a bad one, have it tested at a discount parts store, that service is usually free. Generally speaking, the battery has 40% of its capacity at 0 degrees and it may work fine in warmer weather. I have a tester by OTC that measures CCA and some other factors to determine if it is good or bad.

sorry for the lack of info..
the car is an 03 not sure how old the battery is but its prob more than 2 years old.
the headlights and fog lights came on..although the right side fog kinda flickered..then the gauge lights came on but the needles didnt move..just were normal..no ticking sounds..just wouldnt make the final start up..like i said tried it 2 times third time she started.
annd hasnt done it since..
haha i have however had :q:q:q:q luck with the low pros i got on..snow crept up on me i think i may be doing winter tires in the next couple days

If the engine was slow cranking, it is most likely a sign your battery is weak. At -3 it can also be thick engine oil and in need of a tune up and other factors that affect starting performance. You may want to check the cable connections to make sure you are not dropping voltage across corrosion, that can give you starting issues as well (the ECM will not fire on low voltage)... If you question the battery, take it somewhere and have it tested to avoid having problems.

I typically run SAE 30 oil in my DD and I had to change it over to multi viscosity due to the Arctic weather that settled in... Just a few suggestions about cold weather.

I would take it to your local parts shop.. They have a scanner (if you want to call it that) that hooks up to the battery and they can test it.. I would have that done..

To bring back a slightly older thread....

I'm having a similar issue. I have an 03. The battery has been in there for several years (I've had the car about 3) and I know I never changed it. Anyway, it's been pretty cold here and the car sat for a couple days. Even still, it started right up and I pulled it into my garage because I wanted to see why I was getting a rattle in the door speaker. Anyway, I pulled the driver's side door panel, fixed the speaker issue, went to start it and it didn't start. I threw a charger on it and it took some time but it eventually started. I pulled the car out, went a couple places (where I turned it off and it started back up fine). I got home, parked it in the normal spot, and went about my business. That was around 12. I went back out at about 7pm just to check to see if it would start. It started right up so I figured maybe I just drained it when I was messing with the speaker (stereo/interior lights were obviously on) Today, I went out around 1 pm to run some errands and it wouldn't start. I figured the battery so I went and got a new one, put it in, and it cranked and cranked and cranked and finally started although it kept wanting to die (idle was rough). After it ran for about 30 seconds (with some assistance - feathering the pedal) it ran fine. Do you think the new battery was just kinda drained from sitting or do you think it's a fuel pump thing? I only ask because tomorrow, when I got to work at 5am, if it doesn't start after I just put a new battery in, I'm gonna be pissed haha

I guess we'll find out tomorrow.. :)

I would say the battery may have been discharged a tad.. When I had dealings with buying new batteries, they always hooked the tester up and showed me what the tool said for CCA and the state of charge..
