Hello all,

Was thinking of picking up a Mark VIII in the next 6 months or so (depends when I find the mix of quality/price/location I require). Anyway, I had some questions that I could not get definitively answered by reading the forums.

1: Is there a site that will give me the model year differences/changes?

2: I was planning on getting a 94-96 Fleetwood as I am very familiar with the LT1 engine/drivetrain, but I have never owned a Lincoln before, so I have decided to give it a whirl. The d-body LT1 will dyno (stock) at 210-215 horses and 290 torque, flywheel ratings are 260/330. I have seen the Lincoln's dyno at around the same horsepower and considerably less torque. The torque I expected, but with the 280 horse rating, I am concerned about the relatively low rwhp. Are these cars overrated, loose t/c that is inefficient, what?

3: Differences between the LSC and the base models (broken down by year if possible)

4: Cost/difficulty of replacing air bag parts? I am a decent wrench-turner and not afraid of a moderately difficult jobs (cam swap, head replacement, etc). I have no lift, if it needs such a repair, can a shade-tree mechanic such as myself do it at home?

5: Longevity, I run my vehicles forever, I am essentially a cheapa**. I have never had good luck with 4-valve vehicles lasting more than 110K miles. I always get at least 175K out of a 2-valve car and over 200K on about 3/4 of them. (216K on my LT1 Caprice right now, runs just as good as it did 100K ago). How long does the average motor seem to last and is the tranny good for more than 120K or so? I drive about 40,000 miles a year, so it is a fairly major concern for me.

The rest of my questions I have found in the various forums, appreciate any and all help you could give me on these last 5.

here is a good starting point:

I've never seen 280hp states as being "low" before. I don't have an answer for you.

Some interior trim difference, slightly less restrictive exhaust, and better headlights on the '96 models.

4: Cost/difficulty of replacing air bag parts?
Extremely simple.

A good deal of it can actually be done in the driveway. With the exception of the transmission, virtually all the difficult parts have an extremely long life.

5: Longevity, I run my vehicles forever, I am essentially a cheapa**. I have never had good luck with 4-valve vehicles lasting more than 110K miles. The engine, when taken care of, routinely lasts well into the 300,000 range. I'm approaching 200k without any engine problems or performance problems at all.

The transmission is a bit of a weak link.

Other members will give you a more detailed answer, I just didn't want to see the question sit without an answer right away.

Thanks Calabrio,

My intention is to have a relatively stock highway cruiser (the LT1 and 1100 bike satisfy my need for brutal torque and insane acceleration), having said that, I will probably be sporting a high stall t/c, lower gears, mild exhaust, and intake mods within a year of owning it. I get bored too easily, although I have not as of yet ventured into forced induction. Any other info available folks?

I have heard that the motors run long and hard. I am at 122,000 and my tranny is going. I believe it's pretty common. If you get a Mark go for one with the HID headlights. They are the totally clear ones. The normal halogens suck and are worthless at night.

Thanks r,

I am an alumni from the U of I and am coming down Friday to get laughed at by the young chicks and to watch the game on Saturday. Drop me a PM if it would be cool for me to check out your ride. I am leaning towards the Gen 2 cars at this point, but it never hurts to look at a pretty car.

If you want a low mile car for cheap with the upgrades already done, check here:

Looks like a nice ride, I am still mainly interested in the 2nd gen M8, appreciate the thought though. Truth is, I expect gas prices are going to climb to the low-mid $3 range this Spring and I expect to be able to find a killer deal on one of the big cars at that time.
