What plugs are you using?

what do your plugs look like when you take them out? their appearance should be able to tell you exactly what is causing them to be et up.

Using the AP 764's (autoliteplatinum)

they look a little like they are a very little corroded, but im guessing thats just from the heating up cooling down.

ill take a pic and post it later tonight.

from the pass side bank.

You're wasting money with Platinums at 5K intervals.

Run the Autolite 764 coppers. Gap at 0.048 inches. Do the "nitrous mod" - cut back the ground electrode to about the half-way point the center electrode and round the end off. File any sharp edges and recheck the gap.

You need to get the codes and figure out WHY you get the CEL. Throwing parts at it doesn't fix it.

i bought the obd1 code puller, and everytime that damn light comes on i slam on the breaks and try to get in the hood and pull it before it goes away, to no avail. throwing parts at it is the only option at this point. Fords for some reason dont want to remember the codes that actually matter. The only codes i get from memory, and active run are low voltage on the TPS EGR and MAF. I replaced TPS last year. also i get one for electronic control module or something like that.

Well since the tps, egr, and maf all use a 5 volt reference voltage and you also received a ecm code, I would say you need an ecm. When the light extinguishes, that just means the problem fixed itself. The memory codes correspond to every cel light that illuminated.

I also had the Autolite single platinums. The ceramic insulators looked just like yours, kitchen white along the sides, with a slight light tan coating on the top face.

I would also recommend, that you make sure the metal clip on the end of your wires, actually contacts the plug. When I changed mine to the autolite copper plugs, the Nbr 6 wire pulled out of the stalk 3/8". I had a stumble all week, until I noticed today, that I didn't feel a snap on that wire. All good now.

now...where is, what is, how expensive is, and how hard is an ecm/to replace.

i made sure they contact perfect...and after i changed the plugs out this time, she feels factory new. finally got all the other problems worked out so now the new plugs help make it feel good...but now i need to do that ecm.

ECM is the same as PCM. It is located under the drivers side dashboard. Right next to the Parking brake pedal. You need to remove the lower valence panel, then the metal support plate. Pull the plastic snap holder off the puter, and it should fall down. Then use a 10mm socket to remove the connector.

Before you do that tho, I would check your maf, since it is the easiest sensor to get to, for the 5 volt reference voltage. You might just have a bad wire somewhere and that is why the code is intermittent. If you decide to get a ecm, I would check ebay. I ususally see them on there for 30 to 60 dollars. One from the auto parts stores will prolly cost you 100 to 150. Getting one thru ford, will prolly cost you severall hundred dollars.

i checked the maf, its clean as the day she was born.

ill look arround...and anyone that runs across one gimme a heads up. ty

while we are on the subject, what is the best way to clean the maf? i tried searching, but "maf" is too short a term for the search....

You can pick up an aerosol "electronics" cleaner at parts stores and Radio Shack. Spray and allow to air dry.

Gumcutter 2+2 at CLOSE (but very careful) range using the supplied pinpoint shot tube and get about 1/2 inch away from the wires and spray. Allow dry and re-install.
