Friends,

Newbie here! I’ve been lurking here for about a week now and as one interested in the Lincoln LS, I was glad to find such a place. I absolutely adorn the looks of the Lincoln LS, not to mention it’s American made, a Ford product, rear wheel drive, and something I’ve had my eye on since my senior year of Grad School 2001. In the fall of 2001 I was sitting at a stoplight when a jet-black version pulled up right next to me. I was in such awe of it then that my desire to own five years later has never left me. Getting through school was a hump and setting up a business and getting started was almost as bad. Money was tight and thus I put the car out of sight and tried to pay very little attention to anything regarding the car. Temptation is a terrible thing and for me it is best that I manage it this way…..outta sight, outta mind. Anyway, I’m about 6-9 months out from possibly purchasing a used one and was hoping for some insight. I’ve read through the forums and one of the things I note is that the car seems prone to problems, especially transmission problems. I want a V-8 model and was hoping someone could provide insight on what to look for in purchasing a used model? Possibly model years to stay away from, options that come highly recommended, anything regarding the purchase of this particular car. Thanks in advance for your time and respective comments.

Thanks,

John

Well cant speak for problems as the only issue I've had is the leaking valve cover gasket and luckily for me I caught that before it killed the coil packs. I would say see if you can get one still inside the 4 year 50k warranty just in case. But see if you can pull a few plugs (the ones on the passager side are easy to get to) before you buy it to see if there is any oil on them if there is ether keep looking or have the gasket replaced immediately. As far as the tranny goes I've been here for about 6 months and while I cant say don't worry about it I never got the impression that the issues where that common. Others could tell you better.

I don't know how much your looking to spend but when I bought my 02 I paid $17K and it had 42,000 on it they had a other 02's still in warranty for about $15-$16 but mine had the wings west body kit and borla exhaust on it all ready so I paid the extra. That said if I knew then what I know now I would have gone for one of the 03+ that they had starting at about $16k since you defiantly get more for your money with the 03's and up.

Silver02sport, or anyone, what is the issue with the valve cover gasgets and is it specific only to the 00-02? Also, why exactly do you wish that you had waited and purchased an 03+.

Thanks,

John

The valve cover gasket has a tendency to leak and the oil can short the coil packs causing a misfire but if caught before it shorts them out then its not a big deal to have the valve cover gasket replaced.

The reason I wish I got an 03+ is they had more power 280Hp 286tq instead of the 252hp 267tq the 02- had they also had heated and cooled seats instead of just heated you could get the nav system An electric fan instead of the hydraulic and some other small things truth betold I love my 02 and wouldn't trade it for the world but if I got another it would probably be an 03+ even though I like the way the 02 looks better inside and out.

mine is in the shop now getting both valve cover gaskets done and the ac wored on it only blows cold air on one side both of these problems have tsb on them.....
