i got inside my town car the other day and to my suprise there was no heat coming out. my a/c works fine but theres no heat blowing out. its a little low on antifreeze mabye a quart or 2 but nothing serious. im curious to know what would make the heat stop working. everything seems to work fine but the heat. any thoughts? im hoping its a thermostat or something relatively easy. oh yea its a 96ltc with 114k

The AC works but no heat.... hmmmm.... I think those cars had the infamous blend door too...

I would say it is unrelated to the coolant system if the car warms up and doesn't overheat and drives fine. I would look at the HVAC system in the interior of the car as the problem.

You claim your anti-freeze is low so what do you think is the probem. DUH

I didn't claim anything btw....

I might be wrong but I believe the man wrote a quart or two, so with how many quarts low will the car give problems, read heater.
I believe on any car one should bring all levels of fluid, oil, etc. up to par and than check if anything is working or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just my opinion but works for me.

i havnt got antifreeze yet cause i dont drive the car anymore cause i got a stupid dui. so it isnt on my list to do untill the day i get my license back. i was just seeing what the possibilities could be. i dont think being a quart or 2 low would make much difference though. its in the place where the coolent goes its just 3 inches from the cold fill line when its cold. what would i check on the interior if its with the hvac system

I try and keep all the fluids at there recomended level too... but being a quart low in a Town Car is NOT going to cause you to have no heat.

This probably your problem but in my 93 TC the blower motor went bad one owner before me and they wired it in backwards
also not on my 96 or 93 TC but my 84 CV if the coolant was low it would not produce heat

i think its the door that kustom was talking about. because before it went out when i would switch the system from ac to vent or another position something would make thes groaning creaking noise inside the dash. my friend had that go out in his jeep and the cheapest price to replace it was around 900 bucks. im going to find out how hard it would be to do it on the town car. thanks to everyone for the info. im glad theres a place for lincoln fans to come together

Assuming it is vacuum driven (i'm happy to say my 93 is the first TC of mine I haven't had to tear into the dash, so I don't know) the groaning you hear is just the vacuum actuator moving. It wouldn't concern me any.

My '89, however, did have an issue with the blend door, but the effect wasn't "AC works, Heater doesn't" it was "AC kinda works maybe?, Heater is warmer than the air outside the car but its still cold." What happened was the heater door had a decreased range of motion due to a problem with the hinge and spring assembly that attaches it to the heater box.

If your blend door is vacuum operated, open up your glove compartment and take out the plastic part that keeps it from falling all the way open. You should see the actuator through the hole behind the glove compartment. Pull the vacuum line off the actuator. You will probably hear a thud. Don't worry, its the sound of the heater door opening in the absence of vacuum to the actuator. If the heater blows full hot the door isn't the problem. Instead you have an issue somewhere in the control system or an obstruction in the heater core loop.

DO NOT FOR ANY REASON DRIVE AROUND WITH THE VACUUM LINE UNPLUGGED FROM THE ACTUATOR

Hope this helps!

so I looked in the dash a couple days ago and found that the blend door is controlled by an electric servo as opposed to a vacuum motor.

Having that knowledge produces the question, how does one troubleshoot to find the root cause of unsatisfactory heat in this system? I could pull the heater box out and manually check the range of motion of the blend door but I wonder if there are other things I should be looking for in the logic of the system or the operation of the servo itself.

Does anyone know where I can find diagrams (electrical and mechanical) for the heating and cooling system on the 90-94 TC?

This thread has sparked my interest in determining the cause of unsatisfactory heat from my particular unit when the vehicle is not at full operating temperature (water temperatures between 120 and 190 degrees). Your help is highly appreciated.
