Noise Coming From Front Suspension?

I've been noticing a hollow sound coming from my two front wheels whenever I hit bumps in the road. I'm going to go to the mechanic tomorrow and see his opinion, but wanted to first find out if anyone has had similiar problems. I suspect maybe the tie rods or something. The cars got 100K miles on it so I'm due for some new shocks. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm also curouis how difficult it is to replace the tie rods/shocks on your own. I've just tackled the VC seals so I feel I might be up for the challenge. Any suggestions on brands/prices/sellers? thanks

Could be a lot of different things. I would say ball joint or struts/shocks (were not gonna debate this one again guys). But i would put osme money on the ball joints.
