OK. Got my '00 LS8 Sport the other day finally. I test drove it and there is a definite roar/moan/"lower frequency whine" going on back there. It does it at 30 mph and faster under load, gets quieter when I let off the gas, but gets louder again below 30 mph and you can hear it until about stop. I guess it is whenever those parts have a load on them. I guess I can rule out the wheels and tires as it is load based. I checked for play in the rear wheels and could find none. The seals for the half-shafts look good, but it is dirty under there. I can't tell if it is coming from one side or the other, or the middle. I am still recovering from a nasty stomach virus (had a no puke streak that lasted 13 years too!) so am not quite up to par yet. Was hoping to get some feedback from all of you as to what to look for next. I didn't feel comfortable with putting the rear up on jackstands today while letting the wheels spin. I suppose it might work with the Advtrak off. :)

Anyone replace the halfshafts? They say you need a special tool to protect the seal while installing the new one. WTH! The other special tools look like they can be replaced with a good prybar and hub puller. I don't want to just shotgun the thing, but it could still be cheaper than taking it to a dealer to have them look at it!

Hey...at least the oil is easy to change on these things. I did that today. :)

Thanks.

honestly it sounds like the droaning sound that many have complained about. I still run my 00 LS today and hear the sound under the smae conditions. To my knowledge this issue has no negative impact on the car other than what you hear.

How is the tire tread? has it worn evenly?

Yes, it looks even. The tires look pretty fresh on the car though. I will try to get a recording going down the road and post it. Maybe I will try to contact the last owner and ask him if it was doing it for him and how long. Maybe he will just hang up on me. :)

It is loud enough to make me think that it is something very wrong.

Had a like situation with my new v604 at 700 miles. I would hear the hum between 50 and 60 mph, when I took my foot off of the gas it went away all together. Putting my foot back on would produce the hum again, between 50 and 60 mph. The dealer said it was the rear differential, they put a stethoscope to it to be certain.

Since this car was brand new with only 700 miles they decided to order a new rear-end from the factory. Haven't had a problem since they swapped it out. Everyone at the dealer (parts manager, technicians, service writter) said that this was an extremely unusual repair

Well, finally had some time to get the rear in the air and listen. It is coming from the rear-end for sure. Maybe it is a pinion bearing. I haven't worked on rear-ends...the ONLY thing I haven't rebuilt in my time, so I am thinking of taking it to the dealer. :(

That is never a bad decision but I regret hearing you have to go in.
