Which Fluid?

Tranny? Then it sounds like real old/bad fluid

Motor Oil? Good indication of a blown headgasket. Especially if the oil is milky.

You will have a bit of "bubbles" on the tranny dipstick, not many, but some. Is the fluid red or brownish? If brown with a burnt smell, it's toast.

Like frogman said.....Milky looking oil is indicative of a head gasket problem,(which is a common thing with those engines.) In all honesty I think your stepson was just given a headache that is gonna lighten his pocket substantially. My sister used to own an intrepid, and got rid of it within 3 months.
