Is there a non PATS key that is otherwise the same as a PATS key, same dimensions?

I have obtained an already cut for other car PATS key for 97/98 Marks. What I want to do is for a backup, get a plain key cut and be able to have the PATS key close to it, or dig out the pill, as I currently only have one PATS key.

When I go to hardware stores they put the key through a machine that identifies it as a PATS key and for "legal, blah blah blah" reasons won't then put it into the sizer and cut me a regular key. I still have to clear that hurdle, I guess just find a locksmith store or an independent hardware store.

I'm also interested in this as the car I just bought only came with one starting key and no key fobs.

Looks like the key from my 97 Cougar is the same physical size, so I should be good there. I also want another key cut before my only one gets so worn it no longer works.

The keys are expensive and specific to 97/98 Mark VIII only, so also rare enough the aftermarket for them is limited, causing the costs. PATS keys for my 00 Grand Marquis are less than 10 bucks a piece, I bought 2 for around 6 bucks a piece.

The fobs are fairly generic, I didn't like the peanut shaped one I got with the car, but the old ones from my 2000 Grand Marquis work fine (I installed an alarm/remote start so OEM fobs had been in a box for 10+ years).

Dang, I just got 4 brand new OEM round-style keys a few days ago. They were all sold almost immediately!

Go to Ford with your title and ID. I did this when I first got my 01 Town Car, I had two PATS keys but wanted a spare to have in case I ever lock the keys inside.

Ford will cut you a new non-PATS key for $6-$7.

VIIIedrea, what a great and simple idea. I also ran into this problem when first owning a MarkVIII - in this case my first, a 1995. The independent auto parts store acted like I had a paper tracing of the key and was wearing a mask. My 1998 came with three complete sets, thank heaven.

Why not just open with the key pad on the outside of the car?

My keypad has always worked, I just wish you could leave your car running and lock it sometimes because that would be handy

Battery could be dead or disconnected for storage. Plus my keypad works only 20% of the time.

Or you lock the key inside and cant remember the code.

the keypad on the 96 is a bit sketchy as well. the 93 keypad has never had an issue. wish i knew what that was all about.

You can lock your car while it's running. Press 7/8 9/0 at the same time and it will lock the car. Use your keypad code to unlock it.

Half the time it wont even light up, one day I was playing around with it opening and closing the door. Lead me to believe it was one of the two door switches. Haven't changed them out yet but they need to be replaced ether way. Plus my alarm goes off if I lock it with the key pad or fob.

Figured I would throw this in this thread in case any one else finds their way in here....

To program an alternate code:

1)Enter the five digit permanent entry code into keyless entry keypad.

2)Within five seconds of pressing last button of permanent code, press the 1/2 button within five seconds of pressing the last button of the permanent code.

3)Enter any alternate five digit code within five seconds of pressing 1/2 button.
After successful programming, the doors will signal by locking and then unlocking
