Officially Official: GM kills Pontiac

Rumors from late last week have come home to roost, and as part of its restructuring efforts, General Motors has just announced that Pontiac will be phased out by the end of 2010. GM will continue to build its accelerated viability plan around four brands: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC.

As part of its latest announcement, GM also announced that it plans to have "the resolution" of Saab, Saturn, and Hummer by the end of 2009 "at the latest."

A media conference call is scheduled for later this morning and we will have more details and analysis following that, but for now, the official press release after the jump.

Don't mind seeing Pontiac go their so called sports car the Solstice is IMHO an ugly underpowered POJ. and no competition for the Miata.What GM should have done long time ago is look at some Honda's, Toyota's and Nissan's and make some significant improvements but insteadthey thought whatever we built the consumer will buy. Bad mistake. Maybe now they will wake-up and built some better cars.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Pontiac, I used to have a '76 Trans-Am with a 455 and 4-speed. The only car they make now I like is the G8.

I would have thought GM would have killed Buick first.

buick and GMC should have got the ax. GMC is the same as the chevy models, which makes it pointless, and buicks are bland cars based off of other already existing gm models...doesn't make much sense at all to me to kill pontiac and leave those two. Shoulda made chevy the every man's car, pontiac the fun division, and cadillac the flagship for the company....

Pontiac was the 3rd highest seller list year and Buick/GMC were dead last a long with Saturn..the oly reason why buick servived is because Chinese buy them ALOT...so it is stated.......

I miss the Pontiac Firebird/ Trans Am...the only 2 Pontiacs I'd actually buy

I don't understand it. I can't go anywhere without seeing a Grand Prix or G6. I would have killed of Buick, I know they are big sellers overseas, but not here. I wouldn't have been too disapointed to see GMC go even though I think they look better than Chevy, and they have the Denali line. The Denali line could've always been rebadged and got decent sales. I was hoping they wouldn't cut Pontiac, but figured it would happen. Hopefully they rebadge at least the G8 to something else.
