Well... I have a neighbor who supposedly had a front wheel bearing lock up on him a week or so ago, (non LS vehicle). He replaced the front left, (tapered bearing set), and thought all was good,,, until his truck tied up again on the e-way again recently. So... I went over earlier tonight,,, witht the idea that something was being missed.
He had the front left up in the air... and it rotated good,,, even though he swore that the left front was the problem AGAIN.
Knowing the process of elimination... I jacked up the right front,,, and the right front spun fine. This didn't make sense to him,,, because when a wheel bearing locked up on him... it nose-dived the front of the vehicle.
So... on a whim,,, even givin misinformation... I jacked up the back of the vehicle. (keep in mind i did all this in less than a half hour...
It didn't take much to feel the bad rear bearings,,, somewhere in the rear axle. So I pull the diff plug and stick my finger in. Dry as far as I could reach. So I get a screwdriver and dip to the bottom. Got some sludge that would have been below the bottom of the ring gear.
So I start the truck up,,, put it in gear... and hear a horrendous chatter from the rear diff. I'm hearing spider gears and diff bearings at the same time. Not good!!! Rear end is toast. He says that doesn't make sense... because he did a diff change a year ago with GL-5.
I tell him that not all gl-5 has the same specs,,, and that automotive is different, (when he works in a machine shop). Gl-5 is different for lathes and mills,,, and lacks some of the sulfer compounds needed for the automotive industry. Thus the title of this thread.
So wrong oil is wrong oil,,, and the guy took a shortcut... and is paying for it.
