hey just wanted to let anyone know something.... if you hate changing the freakin oil filter on your mark viii there is a solution. I recently read alot of debates on fram oil filters. well i figure i would try a different oil filter. i went with a walmart supertech oil filter. i know i know walmart, but ive heard good things about these filters... and they are supposedly made in usa. well they are about an inch shorter then the normal filter and actually fit up through the space on the mark viii perfectly. i dont know if the motorcraft is like this but i wanted to let anyone know who may be looking for an easier oil change. hope this is helpful

Maybe, but if its shorter in overall length then it has a shorter filter medium. That means less filtering area, and maybe a faster clog.

possibly but if your engine is creating enough sludge to clog it then the filter was never going to help. if you really think about it they filter out some things but in a contained enviroment such as our motors they dont really trap that much stuff. like i said if you gather enough trash in 3000 miles to clog that filter then your motor was on its way out anyway... and if you use synthetic you dont even have to begin to worry. synthetic does not have all the wax and other fun things that conventional oil has to break down. just trying to be helpful.... no hard feelings

I also got tired of the mess associated with changing the oil filter so I bought an oil filter relocation kit. With that kit you have to start using the FL-1A filters instead of the FL-820's.

You can get 12 Motorcraft oil filters for $35.40 here.

cool,do you have any pics of where you put the filter now,i want to do this.

I have been using the Motorcraft ones. I also found out that I overtightened it, crushing the gasket causing it to leak...I am such a dumb:soapbox:

Sorry, I don't have access to a good digital camera; just my cell-phone, and the pics don't look that good. I'll try to get one as soon as I can.

remote oil filter

Pics would be o.k., but I'd like to know where you mounted the remote filter. Any problems with the kit? That is, any leaks, did they include enough hose, etc., etc.?
Thanks!:)

i always take my oil and oil filter to a shop and have them do it. labor is only $9-$10 and they always give my car to the new guy because they know how hard it is to change. $9 for a good laugh is pretty good i think :p

i take my car to a shop for the oil change too but the thing is, i am pretty sure they crushed my gasket because let's face it, those oil change mechanics are far from pro's.

I used to own a '97 Ford F-150 with a 4.6. The FL-820 was situated right above the front axle. There was absolutely no way to remove the filter, and not make a huge mess. I bought a relocation kit, which used the FL-1A filter. Mounted it on the frame rail, so filter removal was an easy, not messy job. Plus the FL-1A is at least twice the size of the FL-820. And, at least at the time (1996), it was impossible to find a FL-820. Nobody had them, and if you did find one, it was like $8.00. The FL-1A was about $1.99. With the relocation kit, and filter, it added an extra quart of oil to the mix. That is always a plus to me.
