What does this go by? I know my my Chevy Tahoe, it went by a number of things. Engine temps, outside temps when started, amount of hard accelerations, highway miles, etc. Like 15 different things to the equation that told you when to change the oil. I seemed to follow it.

Is the lincoln a simular way? Do most of you change your oil by miles or by the system?

Thanks!

This is a very good question

My mechanic told me to change the oil when the oil life hits 30%. He has a Cadillac STS and changes his when his says 30%.

See I used the oil ife system in my Tahoe, and it worked well. If I was on hwy miles it may last up to 5k.. Lot of city driving it may have triggered at 2500k miles. GM even suggests to follow the system. Most ALL of the people on the GM board go by this, and I bet if I red the manual it would tell me how the car figures out when the oil is to be changed.

LikeI said the Tahoe used about 15 different imputs to calculate the duration. I'd bet the LS does something like this as well.

so 30% why? how does he come to this number? If that was true than why would't they make that 30% the 0 mark? I am not bantering rather trying to understand.???

Is this just something 'he' does as a precaution?

I change mine every 3000 miles and on the computer usually shows about 30% I never go by the computer but the miles instead.

the indicator is a simple 5,000mile count down. I change mine every 3,000miles.

from the manual:

CHANGE OIL SOON/OIL CHANGE REQUIRED. Displayed when the engine oil life remaining is 5 percent or less. When oil life left is between 5% and 0%, the CHANGE OIL SOON message will be displayed. When oil life left reaches 0%, the OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message will be displayed.
An oil change is required whenever indicated by the message center. USE ONLY RECOMMENDED ENGINE OILS.

To reset the oil monitoring system to 100% after each oil change [approximately 8 000 km (5 000 miles) or 180 days] perform the following:

To tell you the truth I have no idea why he said 30%. He's been a mechanic for about 8 years and I've known him for about 5 years and he never B.S.'s me so I follow the advice that he gives me. I guess its just a precaution, we both live in the city and its a lot of stop and go. Maybe I should ask him. :wrench
