Love my 95 Mark and have gone thru the leaking power steering hose, rusted rear brake lines and fuel pump replacement. I've been putting up with the lousy headlights for years and now I find out there may be another problem.

In reading about the rusty oil pans, I'm curious if it might help to clean the pan good and apply some POR 15? Talking to someone today, he told me that the problem is rusting from the inside on cars that are used infrequently.

Just looking for some input. Have the rust problems you've experienced come from the outside in or the inside out?

Outside in on my car, but the metal is still pretty thick so it'll be okay for a while.

Inside out makes no sense to me. I don't see how that could happen if there's oil sitting in it.
 
My 95 base blew the pan form the inside on the highway- blew the motor cause the wife kept reving it -even with the monitor screaming at her!

Car was storged a couple months out of the year and lived in a salt air environment. I think it had less than 90K and blew in 2004... so only 9 years.

My 98 LSC pan is rusting - pretty bad, but it apears to only be outside and this one lives in a moderate climate and is driven daily.

Mobile One used in both changed at 3000, not 5000.
 
They seem to rust out around the seam on the little black box part of the pan.
I thought about using POR15, then going over the bad parts with JB weld, but I think mine is beyond that.
 
Oil Pan

Thanks for the input. I will get out my jack and crawl under tomorrow to see what the oil pan looks like.

I concur with School Zone's comments:

It is understandable how a gas tank could rust out as the gas would have a solvent action on the sides of the tank and moisture could start it rusting, but I thought in an oil pan you would always have an oil film over everything, thus preventing rust.

The comment I got today was from a worker at the local junkyard and they generally have more contact with older cars than the average person.

Will update after the inspection tomorrow.

Phoenix is quite possibly one of the greatest places for used cars. The only thing that suffers here is rubber mouldings. :) No rust. No snow. No salt. No rain. No humidity. :D

You forgot to mention the "Convection Oven" heat like months of May through October, Ultra Violet destruction of anything fabric or plastic and Junk Yard prices that match retail. {venting} :runaway:
