Oil pan rusting

Well when i changed my oil for the first time i noticed the oil pan was flaking with rust at the front of it fairly heavly. How many "layers" does the pan have?

I almost want to take a wire brush and clean it up but unsure if i should not knowing whats under there..Also, What a good product that i can just throw on it with the rust still intact to get rid of it?
 
Do not touch it until your next oil change.Then do your next oil change at home and pick up some jb weld or a equal product that can with stand heat.I just did this right after my oil change and caused the leak to get worse when i was detailing my under carriage.You want no oil in the pan due to gravity and if it is not leaking right now heavy just wait.It took me 2 days to fix mine and solve the leak but i did not have jb quick weld and had to wait for it to cure.Then when you apply it and have enough built up you can sand it and paint the oil pan black again and no one will know a thing
 
dude i wire brushed mine, 1 layer of rustolum rust primer, then semi-gloss rustolium
 
yea thats what i was thinking.

Did you just cut out a square peice of metal and apply jb on the pan side then seal up around the outer edges?
 
I just wound up replacing the whole pan. Got it from that guy on eBay that parts out VIIIs. Think he's a member here, too.

Hit it with 40 or 80 grit sand paper in the rust spots then clean it with lacquer, apply jb quick weld to the rust spots, sand and paint.Might need 2-3 coats of jb weld ,its just like doing body work
 
had the same problem

Yeah I had just about rubbed my entire oil pan off. The entire coating of the pan was gone, it was flaked and just terrible. Mespock sent me a PM telling me about JB Weld, because he did it and let me tell you it worked great. I drained the oil, then jacked the car on the opposite side of the biggest leak, and after 2 days there was no more dripping. Get some sort of a lacquer (I used brake cleaner) and clean it up, then sand it down like papabear said, apply JB Weld and let it cure. I did mine in the summer so it ran really bad and took a while. After that cured I used rustoleum to paint it black, then because I had a bunch of stuff left over I jb welded it again, this time a lot smoother, I then used more rustoleum and lastly some rubberized undercoating. I think I'm ready for the harsh winter. Thanks to mespock on that one though
 
You poor guys & all of your rust, it must really suck. Can't you apply something to the car before it starts to rust to prevent it, or is that just wishful thinking?
 
My pan on my 95 was not all that bad, couple bubbles but no leaks. Well no leaks till i was on Rt 95 doing, well lets say a high rate of speed, and the pan just let go dropped 6 quarts in just a few seconds. I was lucky and didn't spin too bad, but the motor went just as I got straight and off to the side of the road. May she Rest In Peace...

This car spent most of it's life in the high salt air content of the beach so the extra corrosion led to its failure I am sure.

I got a TC afterwards then traded the TC for my 98 LSC so it's all good.
 
Ford could've made em better too, thats more of a WISH than wishful thinking though ha.
