Assuming it's the same story I heard reported on the radio this morning (and really, how many people are stupid enough to drive a $1M car into a lake?), the driver told the police that it happened because of a low-flying pelican. Apparently, the pelican distracted him, then he dropped his cell phone and drove into the lake while he was scrounging around trying to find it on the floorboard.

Sounds like poetic justice to me. What a dumbass.

well the pelicans are pretty damn big...

and they fly just above the rooftops of cars, it's pretty wild
I guess they are surfing the boundry layer of air that flows over stuff.

over the last 20 years, the brown pelican has made a big comeback
When I was a kid down here, you were lucky if you saw 2-3 in a year

Now there are hundreds if not thousands that live in the area.
