So if I swap in an 8.8 from a fox mustang, which i am assuming is steel, is this going to be a problem?

People have been running aluminum driveshafts with 8.8s for years. I don't see why you'd have a problem.

it has a solid rear axles, but the 8.8 centers are the same for solids and irs' - the thing is, one is aluminum and one is steel, so i would be mixing steel center with the aluminum irs - if it's not an issue, i'll go ahead and do it, just concerned about weight, etc.

i should have been more specific and said that i was referring to the center only.

Allright, sorry about that. If you read the wording of your primary post, you can see why I posted that.

by carrier do you mean center?

The thing that holds the ring gear, and the axle/halfshafts spline in to. But come to think of it, I have never seen an aluminum carrier. I have seen an aluminum Spool, but never a differential.
