I just bought my second Lincoln - a 1988 Bill Blass with 64k miles on it, and cosmetically it's absolutely gorgeous. However, I believe overdrive is toast - it acts like neutral when it shifts at higher speeds and the fluid is new and pink. I searched the forums on the topic of overdrive in these cars, and although I couldn't find anything conclusive it does seem to be a common problem. Can anyone help with some overdrive info? Car experience tells me it's going to require a total rebuild, but I figured I'd ask the experts.

yep, very common, I've been through 3 trannies because overdrive is a shaft that gets torn off because of how small and delicate it is. I've done it multiple time because i have a bad habit of downshifting and then slamming back into drive at a high speed

After that freightening recreation of how to destroy an AOD    ... welcome to the board :)

Before you spend another dime, check your throttle body position cable gromet. Scientifically speaking, it's a little orange plastic doo-hickey under the end of the black plastic air intake.

It should look like this:

and not like this:

good call Oldschool, I totally forgot about that, but that usually causes problems shifting in any gear

That's debatable :)

Job one though is to get Dude diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible.

That little doohickie is popped out! Thanks! I'd imagine it's quite a bit cheaper to fix that vs. dropping the tranny! :D

I'm really in love with my Mark VIII, so I'll likely be selling this car. But - as requested, here's a few pics.

These transmisisons are junk unless built right.

This is why i have a five speed in mine. I owned the car for three days before trashing the overdrive.

After driving to three dealers, I finally found the bushing kit...but still no overdrive. Does the whole tranny have to come out, or is this a tranny with the overdrive in the tailshaft?

I believe its in the tailshaft (it slides out?) because that's what get twisted off from the torque (at least in my case)

Sorry to hear that there was more damage to your tranny. Rebuilds start at about $600.00 and can go as high as $1900.00 Yes. The entire tranny has to be removed for a rebuild to correct loosing OD.

Don't sell the car though. They are definately worth keeping and maintaining.

I was trying to buy another Mark VII, if I get it I'll sell you the tranny from it cause I want to keep my AODE out of mine
