overheating issues someone please help

Today my lincoln ls overheated upon the tempature gauge the cars display said somethin along the line of "lowering engine power" and had a weird vibration it was a quick display msg. I then put the car in neutral pulled over. I checked my oil and fluids everything seemed to be fine. Where i am located i cannot find a mechanic to look at it because of the "issue plagued" vehicle it is known for. I was told by a friend it could be a clogged catalytic converter or thermostat. If anyone has had a similar problem or could direct me thru some trouble shooting it would be greatly appreciated.

Search for overheating. There has to be 1000 threads on the subject.......
 
Hence the reason i posted it because i dont know which one of the 1000 articles my car pretained to, if your trying to help keep it moving you douche.

yes every week there are four new people whose car has overheating problems...

9 out of 10 of the times its the same problem...

you're probably not the exception...
 
allow me to summarize all of those 1000 different threads


you probably have a small leak in your cooling system. before you say that you don't have a coolant leak, most of these leaks are not bad enough to allow coolant to leak out.






with the wide range of detailed information you provided, thats gonna be your best bet.
 
Thak you for your response , how would i test it to see if i have a coolant leak? The fluid thats been in the overflow hasnt moved in months. Idk.if that matters im just looking for an idea because like i said in my location no one wants to work on this car. I know theres 1000 threads i just wanted to know if anyone heard of this problem

there is a dye that can be put into the cooling system but i'm not totally sure if it will seep through a small crack that pressure is escaping from but not coolant. i had this issue but it was after i flushed the cooling system because this car has the most complicated bleed procedure i've ever encountered on a car. lol my 2007 e63 amg was easier to work on.
 
Sounds like a leak. The engine will "lower the power" when it is in an overheat situation. From the owner's manual:

What you should know about fail-safe cooling

If the engine coolant supply is depleted, this feature allows the vehicle to
be driven temporarily before incremental component damage is incurred.
The “fail-safe” distance depends on ambient temperatures, vehicle load
and terrain.

How fail-safe cooling works
If the engine begins to overheat:

• The engine coolant temperature gauge will move to the H (hot) area.
• The (oil can) symbol will illuminate.
• The (engine temp) symbol will illuminate.
• The (engine) symbol will illuminate.

If the engine reaches a preset over-temperature condition, the engine
will automatically switch to alternating cylinder operation. Each disabled
cylinder acts as an air pump and cools the engine.

When this occurs the vehicle will still operate. However:

• The engine power will be limited.
• The air conditioning system will be disabled.

Continued operation will increase the engine temperature and the engine
will completely shut down, causing steering and braking effort to
increase.

Once the engine temperature cools, the engine can be re-started. Take
your vehicle to a service facility as soon as possible to minimize engine
damage.

When fail-safe mode is activated
You have limited engine power when in the fail-safe mode, so drive the
vehicle with caution. The vehicle will not be able to maintain high-speed
operation and the engine will run rough. Remember that the engine is
capable of completely shutting down automatically to prevent engine
damage.......
 
Voyeur thanks for your response and input , how would i go about fixing this? Is it a guessing game type of fix? Because like ive stated i cant find a mechanic in my area wiling to fix. Just trying to see if i can get away with fixing it myself with minimum to moderate knowledge about fixing cars . Like i said thanks for your help it is greatly appreciates

Okay, I shouldn't, but I'll bite. However, ridin_ls_, could you at least tell me what year you LS is, and if it is a V6 or V8?

Okay, like many, many threads, your two biggest things to check are the hydraulic fan system and the plastic cooling system parts.
I'd start with checking the hydraulic fan for proper operation. A quick search should get you the details on how do the quick tests on it. If it's your problem, then correct it. If not, then step two for you is to replace all the plastic cooling system parts. Fortunately for you, the gen I has fewer plastic parts than the gen II. Even better, some of them can be replaced with metal aftermarket Jaguar parts.
 
From the information im providing you with is there any way this could be a head gasket issue? Head gasket is my worst fear. I will start to read into testing the hydraulic fan. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for helping me out!! Let me know what you think about it being a head gasket issue as well.

Cooling system problems with the LS are often misdiagnosed as head gasket / head problems. They almost never are (I'm only heard of it being verified twice). You can do a hydrocarbon test if you want to be sure. The failsafe cooling on the LS makes head gasket failure very rare. The plastic cooling parts that develop tiny cracks that let air in duplicate many of the symptoms of head gasket failure.
 
2002 ls v8 huh

Check your cooling fan. I have the same year and the only time it over heats and that's with degraded leaking coolant parts was when I cut the A/C on and the temps out side was above 75 or 80 degrees and low speed travels.
 
I pressure tested the system at 16psi thru the resevoir the needle didnt drop , the vehicle was also off did i do this correctly if so does anyone have a next step to look at

I had a leak that I chased for a week or two on my 04. I would drive it and smell coolant when I parked (not every time). I could look and find some coolant on top of the engine (all new parts and hoses). I couldn't find the source, so I pressure tested it. The pressure held and no coolant leaked. I tried it hot, cold, and in between. Engine off and engine on. Engine at idle, engine at 2500 RPM. Apparently, it would only leak during certain driving situations. In the end, I found the problem (a [new] rubber seal not sealing correctly to the block). Anyway, all that to say that a pressure test is not a 100% thing.

What about the first test suggested? What is the fan doing?
 
I havent tested the fan yet, havent figured it out how to test it yet. Im going to dabble in it a lil more after work. Is the fan something i can give a go myself or would you suggest it be taken to a professional.

You can check it yourself. (There are a number of threads on this.)

1. It should spin at some speed and move some air anytime the engine is running.
2. Start the engine cold with the AC off. Now turn the AC on. The fan should get much faster and louder.
3. When the engine is overheating, the fan should be so fast that it is making more noise than you ever heard when the engine was not overheating.
