Hello forum...i have a 01 lincoln ls v6. The car keeps overheating while sitting still. When i'm on the highway, it doesn't. I recently took it to have diagnostics done on it and they told me that my engine fan is not working and i need to have the engine fan and assembly replaced. Does this sound correct? I researched online for the above parts but they are extremely expensive. And also, they're advertising some of them separately(fan, pump, motor, assembly). Don't want to purchase the incorrect or unnecessary parts...so can someone tell me exactly what i need and my best place to purchase the parts? Thanx in advance for your advice/help.

I suspect that their diagnosis is correct in as much as your hydraulic cooling fan system has a fault.
The equipment and time required to truly troubleshoot the fan system down to which specific part(s) are at fault is very involved. The easy way out (for them, not you) is to just replace all of it, the fan motor, the pump, the hoses, and the reservoir. All of those things could be bad in your case, but it is more likely that it is just one of the parts that has failed.

1. Check the fluid condition. How does it look? Is is cloudy? Is it foaming? Flush it out if it is contaminated. Use Mercon V.
2. Does fluid circulate in the reservoir when the engine is running? If not, you may have a bad pump.
3. Does the fan run at low speed when the engine is running? If not, the fan motor or the pump may be bad.
4. Does the fan fail to speed up when you turn the AC on? If so, it may only be that the fan speed actuator (solenoid valve) is bad.

Some searches of this site should better explain some of the problems and solutions.

You also have the option of converting the hydraulic cooling fan to an electric cooling fan. This is much less expensive that replacing the entire hydraulic system.

thanks! Nice response!

My 02 LS needs the fan and pump replaced as well, or at least i was told. i also assumed it was probably one of the parts within the system and not the complete system. In any event, If i wanted to go ahead and replace the entire system, are the parts you mentioned (fan motor, the pump, the hoses, and the reservoir) all of the parts in the system that i would need to purchase? Do you have a website that you could connect me with, or the part #'s i could look up, to help me find the parts? Your help would be very much appreciated. I figured that would still be cheaper than getting ford to do it. And i don't know if i would trust that ford would actually replace the whole system, vs replacing the exact part that's wrong and charging me the full 2K they say it costs anyway.

thanks again.

thanks,
