OverHeating? or T-stat died?

hey whats going on guys, on the way home from work tonite, about a good roughly 25 minutes after leaving work, my message center said "check engine temp" i look quickly at my temp gauge the needle is all the way up towards the red line. im like thats not cool, i blast my heat ( which was on but not too high ). Then i saw the needle slowly going down, i parked my car popped the hood, i did not see any smoke, i felt the top of my intake manifold, it was hot but not too too hot, it was too dark to see how much coolent i have. But i was thinking after 20 mins of driving the block shouldnt be hot. could it be that the t-stat is on its way out, im thinking so, cause its probably the original one, or was i actually overheating? any help will be appreicated thanks a bunch guys.
 
20 minutes could have heated it up, but not that much, I would pull the t-stat, and test it.....Hell go buy a new one if your gonna be pulling it apart anyway.



But I would also check for trapped air in the system. (pull the plug on the x-over tube and make sure all of the air is out of the system.) I doubt that that is the problem since it was working fine before.

Overheating, Diagnosis

Joey, had the same thing just today on a heretofore working fine Mark. What was the outcome? Was it the thermostat? I can't get it to the shop for a couple of days... I did notice some coolant leaking beforehand, clean, clear, but no needle moving or signs of being hot. Like you said, my car was really not that hot to the touch... was wierd.

Tstat, fan realy or fan itself. Start the car and turn on max ac on the climate control unit and make sure the fan is running. If not then just buy a tstat, get a Hypertech part # 1011. It takes under 30 min to swap.
 
I have a quick question related to this subject.

While driving for roughly 30 minutes, with an occassional pedal to the floor, alot of warm/hot air comes from the main vent by the windshield. The engine temp is roughly at or before M in NORMAL on the gauge. No check eng. temp comes up. Just a lot of warm air while driving.

What ya'll think ? Maybe it's the Cobra hood, LOL JK.

I am getting a new radiator very soon, maybe that could be the culprit. I am also going to throw in a 180 degree T-stat soon.
 
i bought the 180 t-stat, since im in transition of moving to florida, i did not get it installed. i did not notice this when i was checking under the hood, the two screws from my air box was lose.. i mean sticking out of the box, i screwed them back in. my car as of right now is in florida (had it shipped) im going to change the t-stat and flush the coolant. but ever since that night i saw my message center saying "check engine temp" and the needle all the way to red, it never happened again. but just to be on the save side im changing the damn thing.

T-stat

OneBad... you mean if the fan IS running, then it is likey the tstat, correct? But if not, likely the fan... Wonder though if it could heat up that fast [15 min] in 75 degree weather if it were a broken fan? Lastly, you mean 30 min to change the tstat, right?

Yes 30 min tstat job Yes it will heat up that fast in that weather. I would replace the tstat if the fan is functioning.

I hit Florida twice a year, once in summer , once in winter. Either way, 1-2 weeks is plenty enough for me. I don't know how yuz peoples live down there in your cages all year round. Blah, Yeck.
 
well i changed my t-stat yesterday, im going to be monitoring the gauge but i think it should be fine. ill keep you guys posted.
 
ok just so i know *any 160 t-stat and any green coolant out there will work?

19 more days till im a upper mid west member, woohoo!!!!!!!!!!
 
I would not run a 160 degree thermostat, just my personal preference. I like my Motorcraft 180 degree thermostat especially now that the fan is turned on earlier via SCT chip.
 
that is the next thing im installing is the SCT chip... there is a SCT flash shop about 30 mins from me. so it should be cool to see how a chip will do for my car.
 
When you get your chip burned for you make sure to ask them for no more than 4 degrees of timing advance throughout the rpm band. I am running 6 degrees advance and it doesn't ping or anything but I lost some top end. I did however gain low rpm horsepower and torque and improved in the 1/4 mile 2 tenths despite the top end hp loss.
