P0420 Code

So my check engine light came on, so I went to the local auto parts store, and used their diagnostic tool. This is the code that came up: P0420 CATALYST SYSTEM EFFICIENCY BELOW THRESHOLD (BANK 1). The check engine light went off after I disconnected the diagnostic tool. I'm wondering a couple of things here:

1. What's the best way to alleviate the problem???

2. Is my car safe to drive since the check engine light is now off???

3. What could have caused the problem???

O2 Sensor or Cat depending on miles.

If if comes back on, replace the post cat O2 sensor, and try again.

Bank 1 is on pass side, I think.

It's a 2002 with 66,000 miles, so I doubt it's the cat. If it comes back on I'll replace one of the o2 sensors. Thanks.

I had to have a cat replaced at 38,000. Misfiring coils cause it to run rich and clog the cat.

I have cats I bought because I had the same code. I sold the car because I though that was a better plan than dumping all that money into it. I liked the car, Just could't afford it anymore. so Yeah. after i woke up, i just went to the store, hahaha bad o2 sensor haha 55 bucks
