Ok, guys, I have read every article I could find in a search about painting the console parts (cupholder lid, ashtray lid, etc.), and I still don't know how to convert my old, chipped blue parts to smooth black. This coating is sort of rubber, not paint, and I don't know if paint would stick if I sanded this coating off.

If anyone knows what kind of paint would work, where would I find it?

Try Plastic Paint. should be able to get it from any AutoParts store they was just doing this Sunday on Horsepower TV. First wash it down with soap and water then wipe it down with Lacquer Thinner then apply paint. Looked pretty good actually, Hope this helps

they have it here.. http://www.alsacorp.com/products/softtouch/softtouch.htm "Choose between the luxurious options of Velvet, Silk or Rubber to create extraordinary new products, that feel as great as they look."

That'd be great if I wanted to pay $100.00 for a sample quart of paint. I might as well order the new parts straight from Ford.

I appreciate you trying to help, though.

I have seen posts about using oven cleaner to remove the rubber coating and not damaging the plastic underneath. The Plastic under the coating is the color of the interior so there is no need to repaint.

Except that I want to paint the pieces from blue to black.

go to a junkyard, get a piece of trim of any kind for a ford product from about the same year. Try the above mentioned procedures on this trim. This way if it doesnt work, your only out 3 bucks.
