Painters, Detailers, Body guys, KK. I need paint advise for the chameleon

It was on the hood when I bought it. It is a chip the size of a ring finger fingernail [I can see primer though]. I talked to a local shop [they have done mucho work and are damnnnnn good with paint. They said the hood would have to be sprayed and the tops of the fenders blended. They shot me an estimate of between 1500-2300. That also included 5 dings PDRed and a good buffing. They also guarntee it will be right. And yes I informed them I am a perfectionist when it comes to this car. "It must be right". I think this is high but I will and have payed for carefulness. To put it in perspective I paid $90.00 [including tip] for my alignment. I have an alignment machine at my shop. I just wanted the on paper guarantee to be honest.

I do know a little of body work, but my father passed away before he could teach me all the subtleties as an adult. I know you wetsand to take out orange peel, and to make it smoother. So here is my idea I can get the touch-up paint made from a local shop and touch it in. then a little clear coat over the general are and then wetsand it smooth.I know there would be a small blemish wher the spot was but it would be better then an exposed chip. I am thinking that I would wind up with a spot the size of the chip. Understand this is with my very small understanding of bodywork. Any advise and help would be appreciated, thank you forum.
 
fill the chip the best you can and save the money, if half the hood was missing paint and the car was mint, i would paint, but for a chip, hell no, you want to drop $1,500 + for a chip???
 
No WAY they will be able to get the flip flop right... it will never look the same...

I'm 100% serious when I said I'll come down and detail it... you aren't that far...
 
So my theory is correct! It can be spotted, cleared, and wetsanded clean with a spot left that will be the size of the original chip?
 
KK I would love to get the car in you're hands. I just can't afford it right now. I become rich once a year around taxtime and make one large [or several] purchase. this year I got lucky. After bills this was it for us. The alignment was the final thing.

I was thinking it could be easier with a small flaw this way and still stand the test of time. I want to have original paint [and to be able to say that an a 30 year old car one day]. Even if it has a minor flaw on the hood.


I don't want to do this[paint thing], but I want a guarantee also. I need a body master that is a friend. I really need someone I can trust, I guess.
 
Hey man don't worry too much about the $$ thing... The chance to work on a car I love with such amazing paint would be worth it!
 
If they can guarantee it perfect I say let 'em have it haha, get it in writing! And get a complete paint job. So long as it's a tri-coat paint. They'll never get any of it to match.

And if it is a tri-coat paint then yeah.. you won't be able to get that touch up to match very well. Maybe so it doesn't stick out so bad though.

If I every bought a new car or a car with mint paint I'd get at the minimum the full front clip wrapped, if not the entire car...
 
full in the chip with touch up paint, its good to use a tooth pick. Fill it above the paint line.

Then you have to sand it down and buff.

Theres lots of info out there on detailing forums on how to do it. If you have no exp. detailing, do not wet sand yourself. It is good to get a paint depth reader first too to see how much clear is still on the car.
 
If it's just an eyesore to u, fill it and be done.

Ponies is correct.

It's a lot of work laying the coats match Chams and candies and even metallics sometimes. Silver is my nemesis. Especially if paint is older.

like jamie said. Not worth it. A few dollars more and u can do the whole car. For some, it's easier to jus paint the whole car. Minus the masking.
 
Thank you huys fo all your help. I am going to just fill it with touch up. I just don't want to leave an exposed spot where the clear can start to peel.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but Ponie, that is one of the nicest Black Mark VIIIs I have ever seen.

Great choice on wheels, great stance, bad without being boy racer.
 
I have a local parts place that says they can mix up some touch in less then ten minuts. Is that what you mean?
 
Paint scratch doesn't even acknowledge that TA was a 95 Mark color... but if they say they can get it for you good deal!
 
I told him it was a 95 lincoln mark 8 and the paint code was TA. He looked through a book and said it was vermillion blue he said it was a mix of purple and blue, almost a candy color.
