so today I took my old engine apart to see what I did to it, didn't have to look that hard. the damage was at the front of the engine. heres some pics for ya'll to enjoy. also a question, I saw this piston which is NOT the one with the thrown rod yet its in the back of the engine, it's all messed up, anyone ever see that b4?

I need some background on this one. stock motor? Nitrous?
I have yet to see a rod go on a Mark VIII motor. Typically, since the bottom end is so small, and the heads are where all the "power" is, they toss valvesprings. I've laid witness to 3 valve spring tossers, and one that actually beat up the piston so bad, there is a hole in the top of it. But a snapped rod?...wow.

As far as the pucker-factor on that one piston, there are quite a few possible causes. I predict you hydrauliced the motor...the piston tried to compress water, and couldnt. head gasget failure?

well a lil background.. 1 night before x-mas I was at a friends house driving home and I got on it and started manually shifting, which I've done before.. anyways when I got into 3rd gear I think I felt something and I looked in my mirror and saw a huge cloud of smoke come out my exhaust. it was running like total crap afterwards, hardly any power the whole car shook like crazy when you touched the throttle. so the next day I started it up and it still ran like crap, I took the intake off tube off and saw oil all on the inside and all tver the throttle. brought it to a shop and they changed the oil and told me it just seized there.

The car sat in the yard till I got a new engine. `as I was taking the whole intake off there was at least a quart of oil in the intake manifold.

on a side note in my green mark I had a valvespring go and the car ran like total crap, exactally the same as when this happened to the engine that night. I had this same shop fix it back then, so I figured I'd bring it back cause I thought it was that same thing.

I have yet to see a stock 4.6 throw a rod like that. Damn. As far as the piston, It looks ALOT like a lean condition blow through. BUT being a stock motor, i don't see that.

I dunno man. Sucks tho.

.

So now that the engine is apart,is the headgasket toast or what.

looks like the gasket let go and dump the cylinders full of liquid.

thats what would def. break a rod, right guys?

Kind of rare

It would be rare for a motor to just hydraulic one cylinder with enough liquid to break a rod like that. More than likely that rod had a flaw that was not caught on assembly and getting on it just happened to be the final insult. As far as the piston goes, a melt down like that is almost always caused by a lean out. Usually caused by a clogged injector or bad wire to that injector. Those types of injuries are usually seen on nitroused cars, and are usually caused by not having the secondary fuel supply tuned correctly or a failure of the secondary fuel system. Never saw a 4.6 go like that one outside of a track condition.

so could the same thing happen to my new engines piston? I mean the car runs perfect, well almost it runs like crap till it warms up( I think the iac or tps is bad) but I don't think the injectors are bad. I have a adjustable fpr which may not be putting enough fuel in so that could be leaning the engine out right?
