There are two rubber elbows (breather hoses, part of the PCV system) that deteriorate on the v6 LS/s-type.

One is located under the lower intake manifold, and the other is right at the back of the upper intake manifold.

I hate to say it but your buddy wasted his time changing the intake gaskets. because to get to the lower breather hose you have to remove the upper intake manifold, then remove the lower intake manifold (fuel injection manifold) and you will see the bigger rubber elbow in the valley near the back.

You need to replace that one and the other smaller one at the back of the upper intake attached to a plastic tube that runs under the upper intake and connects to the throttle body.

I charge 4.5 hours to do the job, parts are not that expensive, its hte labor that kills you.

p0171, p0174, are lean codes.. bank 1 and bank 2... indicating short trim rose past a point to trigger a lamp.. most common cause is a air leak... however if you do not locate one another common cause is the everloving good ol maf sensor... see since you popped both banks lean a hose on one side of the intake (depending on factors) or a gasket usually sets p0171 or p0174 but rarely both.... o2's rarely go bad but get changed alot.. too bad.... just food for though...lol
