Poll Shows Many Can't Find La. on Map

WASHINGTON (AP) - Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of the damage from Hurricane Katrina, nearly one-third of young Americans recently polled couldn't locate Louisiana on a map and nearly half were unable to identify Mississippi.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of the damage from Hurricane Katrina, nearly one-third of young Americans recently polled couldn't locate Louisiana on a map and nearly half were unable to identify Mississippi.

Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 fared even worse with foreign locations: six in 10 couldn't find Iraq, according to a Roper poll conducted for National Geographic.

"Geographic illiteracy impacts our economic well-being, our relationships with other nations and the environment, and isolates us from the world,'' National Geographic president John Fahey said in announcing a program to help remedy the problem. It's hoping to enlist businesses, nonprofit groups and educators in a bid to improve geographic literacy.

Planned is a five-year, multimedia campaign called My Wonderful World that will target children 8 to 17. The goal is to motivate parents and educators to expand geographic offerings in school, at home and in their communities.

They will have their task cut out for them, judging by the results of the survey of 510 people interviewed in December and January.

Among the findings:

- One-third of respondents couldn't pinpoint Louisiana on a map and 48 percent were unable to locate Mississippi.

- Fewer than three in 10 think it important to know the locations of countries in the news and just 14 percent believe speaking another language is a necessary skill.

- Two-thirds didn't know that the earthquake that killed 70,000 people in October 2005 occurred in Pakistan.

- Six in 10 could not find Iraq on a map of the Middle East.

- While the outsourcing of jobs to India has been a major U.S. business story, 47 percent could not find the Indian subcontinent on a map of Asia.

- While Israeli-Palestinian strife has been in the news for the entire lives of the respondents, 75 percent were unable to locate Israel on a map of the Middle East.

- Nearly three-quarters incorrectly named English as the most widely spoken native language.

- Six in 10 did not know the border between North and South Korea is the most heavily fortified in the world. Thirty percent thought the most heavily fortified border was between the United States and Mexico.

Joining in the effort to improve geographic knowledge will be the 4-H, American Federation of Teachers, Asia Society, Association of American Geographers, National Basketball Association, National Council of La Raza, National PTA, Smithsonian Institution and others.

"Geography exposes children and adults to diverse cultures, different ideas and the exchange of knowledge from around the world,'' said Anna Marie Weselak, president of the National PTA. "This campaign will help make sure our children get their geography - so they can become familiar with other cultures during their school years and move comfortably and confidently in a global economy as adults.''

But then again............................

Those same polls show that the majority of the people who were displaced by Katrina couldn't even find Louisana on the map even before the hurricane. And 98% of them still can't find it now, wether on a map or in person. "And you wants me to find Miss who?"

I knew a kid oce who passed the GEd with flying colors....

He thought Washington DC was i the NorthWest part of the country....

Gee, I wonder why geography is such a problem for our kids. Maybe it's because geography teachers like JAY BENNISH waste our tax dollars screeching to kids about the evils of Bush and the Republicans INSTEAD of teaching geography!

Sadly, only about four of us will even remember who Jay Bennish is....

I do agree with you that he abused his power as a teacher to impress his opinion on his students and that is wrong. But, if he had compared Bush to someone like Jesus the whole of the Right Wing would be praising this man instead on condemning him.

Wrong. I wouldn't have been. You continue to fail to recognize that Conservatives like me are intellectually honest with our criticism and praise.

Stop judging right wingers by leftwing standards.

Then you're the rare breed conservative...

Okay, smart guy, name ONE conservative on this board (I'll make it easy for you) who's a blind Bush/GOP supporter no matter what he does. I bet you don't find one. I, on the other hand, could name several Bush-hating, GOP-bashing libs on this board who don't give any credit for anything Bush or GOP does.

That's a silly question, no one would come out and admit that they support Bush no matter what. But that doesn't mean it isn't so and there are many threads on this board in the past to support that some people feel that way.

It's not a question at all; it's a challenge. Quote me one, smart guy. And not one that accuses that by one of your lib friends, either. One that PROVES YOUR POINT.

Your job to back up your own statements. I don't have to prove a negative.

I'm not going to scourer threads from a year back so I can point the finger at someone in particular. Besides, any thing I dug up would be met with defiance as it has been in the past, like I said, no one will admit to being a 'Bush Zealot', even when their own words contradict them. It would be an endless circular argument.

Same goes for the reverse, if you pointed the finger at someone being a blind Bush hater that refuses to see anything positive Bush has done they'd probably come back with "He hasn't shown me anything to be positive about." (A similar argument exist in here form long ago) and round and round it'd go...

And what's with the 'smart guy' comments? lol

It's better than calling you 'dumb guy', wouldn't you agree?

Look, you made the irresponsible blanket statement about the 'whole of the right wing.' I'm just challenging you to back it up or retract it. You obviously are either unable or too lazy to back it up, so you should retract it. We all know it's not true anyway.

Well, you're saying 'Smart Guy' in a sarcastic sense, at least that's the way it sounds. So in essence, you’re calling me dumb.:D

I am unwilling to point the finger at someone as you requested and 'we' all don't know that. But if it makes you happy, saying whole was wrong because it reality it simply can't be so. So how about 'A large portion of the right' wouldn't of had a problem with this guy expressing his own private opinion on his students if he had compared Bush to someone favorable to them i.e. Jesus.

No, the point is: Geography class is about teaching geography.

Actually, I was saying it in a facetious sense, challenging you to show how smart you are, since you were making an obviously omniscient statement.

You're wrong about the right's attitude, and that is because you really don't understand how intellectually honest we are with ourselves. You assume that just because the left is so blatantly partisan regardless of how damaging that is to America, therefore the right must be the mirror image and polar opposite. That just isn't the case. I can say that because I know firsthand how a conservative thinks.

Why don't you do a straw poll and see what kind of data you get? You seem very interested in standing by your statement, but you have no data with which to back it up.

You're pointing the finger at me for using a blanket statement while blatantly ignoring your own similar actions....

Your mindset does not encompass the whole of the conservative party my friend and not all liberals are 'blatantly partisan.' There is a grey zone... I'm sure you see me as a die hard liberal but guess what, I agree with you on several topics, sometimes wholeheartedly sometimes partially, i.e. Moussaoui's sentence, immigration...

Ok, fair enough. I think we've both made our points. Neither one of us owns a monopoly on the thoughts of everyone else.

You wanna let this go since we're bein' nice 'n all?
