My Dad's 2005 V6 has been leaking power steering fluid for a few weeks and seems to have now run very low. He didn't seem to think it would be an issue but and planned on taking it in next week, but I went to pull it into the garage and heard a buzzing sound, especially when turning the wheel. The steering feels lighter than normal (would have expected it to be heavier..) My question is, would driving it at all ruin the pump? Also, could that Lucas leak stop fluid work in this case? I have read some about an issue where an electric connection becomes loose on the pump. Thanks for any input!

Yes.... It may; temporarily and possibly at the expense of the pump and/or rack. The correct solution is to find and fix the leak.

I understand that for our cars they take Mercon ATF for the power steering, but is there a difference between Mercon SP ATF and Mercon LV ATF? Not very knowledgable about this kinda stuff.

I'm not sure what the differences are, but Ford info says repeatedly not to use SP or LV where V is called for, not to use LV where V or SP is called for, and not to use V where SP or LV is called for. I'd say the three are not interchangeable at all.

Ford originally called for Mercon for the power steering, and then put out a TSB saying to always use Mercon V for the power steering (on the LS, among others).
