my car makes alot of valvetrain noise and knocking on a cold start that useuelly last about 3-7 second and then there is enough oil pressure for the engine to run.

so to keep my 93 engine lasting longer than a month i need an oil acumulator or some kind of pre oiler system, i will be switching over to ams oil in there but i dont think that will be enough.

any cheap solutions to this problem, the cheapest acumulator i found was in sumit for 59.99 and i found a pre oiler for 189.99.

I think it would be worth it IF you don't want to swap out the tensioners. Ford has a "fix" for the cold start problem. But requiers removal of the front cover and all of the corresponding stuff attached to it.

I have considered it, but have ended up pulling the covers to be powdercoated, so no big deal for me.

Do you have more information on the "fix"?
I am just curious.

well its bad, my 94 with over 200k rounds on it dose not do it but the 93 with 133k on it dose.

how dose this happen, is the oil pump clearences getting so large that the oil pessure drops or what is the cause of this problem

well i would like to know the the fix but it sounds like alot of work that i dont want to do in the snow. a pre oiler sounds easyer and quicker.

on tuesday im getting a remote start/alarm (clifford matrix) put in and if i do that is there a way to tie the peroiler to start and then get the engine to start?

While not a Mark, my 92 cougar (3.8) rattles on cold start until the lifters pump up. Been doin it since I owned it (4 yrs now), with no detrimental effects that I have noticed, other than the noise on startup. takes only 2 to 4 secs for the lifters on the cougar to fill.

Side note, my 91 conti, same way, but not as bad, as is my 94 Jimmy. All pushrod V-6's...

if anything, I would guess the lifters in mine are wearing some. or the oil is a little stiff when cold. Remember, when you shut off the engine, the hydraulic lifters will eventually loose the 'captured' oil in them and rattle a bit till they fill up. Is this what your hearing? I dont know if your mark has a pushrod or OHC engine in it.

mine makes a quick noise, not even 1 second...first time i heard it was today, when my daughter started the car. also sounds like there is some kind of starter noise, could be related, i really haven't had time to give it a good listen.
my mark8 has about 93k on it. i just changed the oil last sunday, used a motorcraft filter, and cheap exxon oil, i wonder if that is the culprit. i think i am going to drain it tomorrow and put better oil in it. i will just use the rest of the case for my chevy....lol
i had a contour before this that made a similar noise for at least 4 years. it had 94k on it.
any oil recommendations?
