Hi guys. well I bit the bullet and bought a 97 Gen2 base from a local guy here. Black on Ivory. Pics to follow soon, after a good wash. (been way too cold for that here...but that's another story.).
The previous owner was getting frustrated with 20mpg and rough idling etc,. high mileage. 250K. runs fair and shifts great. ride is converted from air to springs. so I got it for a pretty decent price. Black paint has some typical fading issues on bumper, trunk lid, roof etc..
ill be needing some interior pieces in ivory color like switch covers, cupholder and minor stuff. theres a bit of rattling when going over bumps. ill need to get under her and check it out. going to switch title info today. im going to have to learn all about the gen2 now...lol I cant wait for spring now!!

Congrats! Best of luck with your new ride. I know I have cupholders but I dont think I have ivory. I will keep a lookout in my local yards.

I could really use a driver side visor from a vehicle with no sunroof in ivory.
the green machines running pretty good I just got done putting a bunch of money into her, so she's going to be around for a while. I'll be driving both This year.

anyone have a pats key blank that they wanna sell? and what do I have to do to get the key to function? is there some sort of programming needed? only 1 key came with my 97. didn't they also come with the peanut shaped remote too? mine is square like my gen 1 remote, but it works.

*Your gonna run your battery down doing this so be ready.

1) Turn the key to the on position (2)
2) The anti theft light will blink for 15 minutes so let it
3) Once it stop blinking you have 40 sec to turn key off then back on again, remember do not
Take out the key
4) The anti theft light is gonna blink for another 15 minutes
5) once light stop blinking turn key off then back on again and repeat the process a third time totalling a 45 minute reset
6) after light stop blinking turn key off then start car and now your key is programmed to the new SCIL.
Reason why it takes three 15 minute steps is because
1) to learn new key
2) is to erase old code
3) is to program new key.
I hope this helps anyone else in this situation and not have to pay dealer program fee.

If you have the ones with lights in them, they are super easy to recover with some headliner material. I need to do mine on the new mark (AZ is not friendly on headliners.) I did the ones for my Thunderbird, and with a little bit of cutting and tucking with a putty knife, they were good to go.

I took the 97 to Vato Zone while I was in Mpls today, and had it scanned for free with their OBDII scanner. she threw a bunch of codes. there is a misfire on cyl 4 and a misfire on cyl 7. also a code for a bad O2 sensor on bank 2. and this one doesn't surprise me, but its a real easy fix on a gen 2, and that was a code for a overspeed IAC valve.
so the guy tells me that the misfires could cause the O2 sensor to throw a code when it really isn't bad. so im assuming that a COP set, and new plugs/wires are in order first.
then an IAC valve.
any recommendations on a brand name for cop?

Do Gen 2's like the autolite 764's like the gen 1's do, or is there a better spark plug for the newer motors?

Stick with Motocraft for COPs. Replacing all 8 can be expensive though, no need to replace ones that aren't broken however. I would order 2 COPs and set of spark plugs. Autolite 764 works great.

Gen2's are fine on 764's, but if you want to put a set in and not worry about changing them for a long while consider platinums.

Don't assume the coil packs are bad
Look for bad boots, bad plugs and or oil in the spark plug wells.

The PAT

1. Make sure you have both keys.
2. Turn on car but don't start. Watch "theft" indicator until it goes out.
3. Turn off and repeat procedure with second key.
4. After "theft light goes out, insert new key and turn on.
5. Wait until the theft indicator goes off and then turn off switch.
6. Wait thirty seconds. New key is now programmed into security module. Repeat for any other keys.

You will be happier with the square remote. It should be shorter than the one for the Gen I. I had no range with my peanut shaped remote, but the ones from my 2000 Grand Marquis (the square ones) are much better. I ordered colored cases (and a charcoal one too) from Hong Kong to replace a broken one, and to be able to pick them out easier.

If you have one key, then you shouldn't need to do the 45 minute reprogram, just the quicker process someone else posted. I need to do the same thing, I only have one key, and this key isn't like the more generic easily available other Ford PATS keys.

+1
Move COP and see if the miss fire code follows it.
It also explains the poor MPG.

Were are those dam pics?

Just to be first, it will be worth 200 more dollars, get 5 more mpg, and idle better when the wheels are on the correct sides. :)

I am afraid to ask what you blacked on the bumper below the drivers side light in the picture with the obscured plate. :)

Lol I was waiting to see whod be first to point that out. Its been way to cold for me to change it over.
Itll happen soon. I have some better rubber to put on her. If not for the cold, we would get at stuff soonest on our marks sooner up here. ....can't wait for spring...as far as the black marks are, that was my first atempt using a photo editing tool on my phone.
