pump or whirring noise tirns on after car is shut off

Does anyone know what the whirring pump noise is on the front of the 2001 ls after the car is shut off? There appears to be a cylinder with a cap that turns on after shut down. Any ideas what or why?

Aux coolant pump front of engine right under upper radiator hose.

The reason why it's turning in is the car is running hot or overheating.

The auxiliary coolant pump:

- provides heater coolant flow boost.
- has a secondary function of providing engine-off cooling.
