Hello, I have a 2003 Navigator ultimate and about 60% of the time when I turn on the ignition and start the car it makes a loud pop/grunt from the engine. Almost like a very small backfire. If the car is in the garage it sounds like the noise kind of bounces off the floor, leading me to believe it is something on the bottom of the car. I have been told that a very common grunt noise is from the a/c compressor on these models, when the air is left on or when turning the air on. But it did it all winter long and to my knowledge has nothing to do with the a/c. This noise seems to be coming from the engine itself. I have taken the car to 4 differnat lincoln dealerships and 2 ford dealerships and they claim to hear nothing or say a grunt noise during start up is normal, does anyone else have this problem with the 5.4 32 valve in-tech engine or is it a mystery? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also recently after the car has set for a while when I start it there is a sound almost like a loose belt for the first 3 or so seconds then it just disappears. I thought it might be the oil filter building up pressure or something, but the more I hear it the more I think it might be the alternator or starter or something- it pulses with the engine and is noticably louder almost like a sqeaky wheel. I can not duplicate this at the dealership because the car has to have sat for a while, and with my past experience with lincoln service department when they don't know what it is, "it is a normal thing for this vehicle..." The funny thing is it started THE DAY I started having lincoln do my services. Anybody's thoughts?
