I have a 2004 Navigator with the AM-FM-CD-Nav system, Part number 3L7T-18C985-AH. My problem is excessive static on the the AM band which seems to be mostly ignition noise. The FM band works fine as does the CD and the Navigation system as well. The static varies with the engine rpm and is completely gone if the engine is not running.

Initially the AM reception was intermittent, but I corrected that by replacing the antenna cable (Ford TSB was issued regarding hair-line cracks in antenna cable cnter conductor). I swapped the entire radio/CD/NAVI system with one from a 2006 Navigator, but the problem was still there. I disconnected the alternator and the problem still exists.

The engine diagram shows 2 ignition interference capacitors that supposedly are physically located towards the front of the engine, but I can not find them on the front or the back of the engine.

Has anyone experienced this problem with a similar radio system or does anyone have any ideas ????

I have a 2005 Navigator with the same am/fm/cd/nav unit as you and also have the AM static problem. The Lincoln service guy just scratches his head when I tell him about it.

On a recent trip I noticed something really weird. With the AM radio on (and lots of static), I opened the rear quarter windows -- static disappeared or was reduced significantly. If the static returned, I'd just tap the window switch, and the static stopped. A pain in the butt, but does let me listen to some AM radio when on the road. I think there must be a problem with the rear attennae or at least with the leads going to it. Your post mentioned a service bulletin on the antennae -- do you remember the number?? Thx
