someone said the bolt @ the bottom of the pan is not the drain bolt. then why did I get 2 Qts of fluid ot of it? Did theY over fill the tranny fluid? I am getting really POed cause I cant afford to take my car in and pay 1200 $ to have my Solinoid replaced if that isnt whats wrong! where is the solinoid located anyway?

GET A MANUAL

This really is the only way to go, for a DIY project. Here is one exploded veiw of the 5R55N tranny, in two parts due to size.

The draining and filling depends on the tranny, I was going to post those, but figured I will wait to see if you reply., and post the right procedures.

You can only drain about 1/3 of the tranny fluid using traditional ways. If you would like to completely change the fluid you have to flush the system at a local shop. They pressurize your tranny forcing all the oil out. The only drawback to this procedure is that it can be dangerous with higher mileage vehicles and can weaken/burst seals.

I usually just drain and fill (traditional way) every other oil change or so just to keep it fresh. Its inexpensive, especiallly when i'm paying $6 a quart for Mobil 1 Synthetic.

I would, but there's no PCM code for a manual. And then I'd have to fab up a clutch pedal assembly, and...

Oh, you mean a Service Manual, like the book? ;)

Either pop for the shop manual (an excellent idea), or drop $25 for a year-long subscription to AllData DIY. They're really cheap insurance, and they'll tell you the correct way to do things.

Always one in the crowd... I meant a SHOP MANUAL :p

2001 V 8

where is the solenoid? inside or outside of tranny? is it a drain plug? it looks like a bolt but has an allenhead scrw in the middle. and where do you fill it?

solenoid involves removing the tran pan and then it's in there. usually when they do the solenoid they do the valve body is well. those two parts are pretty pricey.

you fill it by removing the screw in the middle of the plug and then using a suction gun to SHOOT new fluid up in there. pretty messy and best left to the dealer IMO

No offense intended, but if you don't know where the solenoid is, you probably shouldn't try to do anything with it. It's part of the internals of the transmission.

You definitely need a shop manual or access to AllData. The bolt you're describing is officially called a transmission fluid fill plug. In the instructions for changing the fluid, however, the inner bolt is the fill plug, but the outer bolt is referenced as the drain plug.
