Have any of you ever heard of the Ravelco anti-theft device?

http://www.nohotwire.com/

With more than 3.5 million installations since 1976, the Ravelco Anti-Theft Device is the only anti-theft device that has never been defeated. The Ravelco offers an unbeatable combination of sturdy construction, secure technology and ease of use.

How the Ravelco Anti-Theft Device works
The Ravelco base unit is installed in or underneath your dash. The wires from the back of the base unit are connected to various electrical components your engine needs to run (such as the ignition, starter, fuel injection system, fuel pump, engine sensors, etc.). We give the owner the ability to prevent the flow of electricity to those systems by pulling the plug out of the Ravelco base unit.

Why the Ravelco is so effective
Underneath the dash the wires behind the Ravelco base unit are protected with steel, so thieves can’t get access to them. Even if they did, all the wires are the same color, and there is no pattern to give away the pairs.

Inside the engine compartment, all the wires are hidden inside the factory wiring, and behind engine components. Thieves want to get in your car and be gone within 5 minutes. A thief would have to unravel your car’s electrical system, and thieves just don’t have that kind of time.

The Ravelco is keyed to your car

There are no master plugs for the Ravelco. You can be assured that only your plug will work on your car. With more than 100,000 possible combinations for the Ravelco Anti-Theft Device, the specific physical signature of your vehicle's plug cannot be guessed.

The base unit is installed in your vehicle, either bracket mounted under the dash, flush mounted in the dash, or concealed from view. When you leave your car, you remove the plug from the Ravelco base unit and attach it to your key chain.

Without the plug, electricity can't flow to key vehicle components. Because we are disabling various engine components, there is no power draw form the car's battery, and no need to replace batteries in a remote.

100% Effective and 100% Reliable
It's not enough that an anti-theft device is 100% effective in preventing thieves from hot wiring your vehicle. You also need the peace of mind that comes from knowing that each and every time you insert the Ravelco plug, the vehicle will start reliably, ensuring that technology designed to prevent theft doesn't inadvertently prevent operation of your vehicle. The Ravelco is made in the USA of the highest quality metals. The female pins are made out of a memory alloy that always maintains its shape. Ravelco Anti-Theft Devices that were installed 20 years ago are working just as reliably today.

On September 25th 2001 in Mexico City, where an estimated 200 vehicles are stolen each day, the Ravelco Anti-Theft Device was put to the test. CESVI-MEXICO, a company owned by the seven major insurance companies in Mexico, tried to hot wire and steal a Nissan Sentra equipped with the Ravelco device.

CESVI-MEXICO said they would approve the Ravelco if it passed the 8-Minute Test, by preventing professional thieves hired for the occasion from starting the vehicle within an 8-minute timeframe. At that time, no theft device or alarm ever took more than three minutes to bypass. But after cutting wires and trying for 35 minutes to bypass and disable the Ravelco, the company's hired thieves gave up.

As a result, CESVI-MEXICO approved the Ravelco.

Friend has one on his 1962 Thunderbird Sport Roadster. Cant tell it even has it unless you pull the dash or know where the special lock is. I think he paid over $700 couple of years ago. It was done at a car show in Washington DC - right there on the convention floor.

Only drawback was you have to have a special key and place to plug it in. On a show car that was difficult - prob why it cost so much. The second drawback is that if you loose the keys (he had two I believe) that is it you are dead - there are no others no master key no hidden switch.

Car has never been stolen so I guess it is workin. The car never see the light of day either. He also has a Lo-Jack - which doesn't even work in his concrete garage.

I think any theft deterrent is a good idea, if cost effective. Let your insurance company know, it might drop your premiums some!

i asked them what would happen if i lost a key, and they told me they could send me a new one - i think the keep track of what car has which combination.

I am very very close to buying this system unless someone can convince me why I shouldn't....
