I've been doing a lot of searching and I'm sort of unclear on this.

The rear deck speakers in the premium audio system are consistently referred to as "subwoofers". However, when I was eyeballing them from the trunk, they appeared to be 6x8's, at least in size.

I have an extra pair of 6x8's laying about that could easily swap in there, if they are, in fact, the same size. My question, then, is two-fold - one, is it worth replacing the deck speakers? And two, are they the same size?

And as an added bonus - how the crap do you access the speakers? It looks like a bit of a pain in the ass to get to them.

Crutchfield's website shows 6x8's for the rear deck. I had to use a socket wrench with a long extension to get to the bolts/nuts. Also for what it's worth if you do remove the enclosure it's pretty ackward and slightly heavy.

I had to access it through the trunk. If I remember right I had a buddy inside the car with a wrench on the nuts. The rear deck carpet comes out, but I had to take the rear pillar covers off to remove it

Alright, cool. Sounds like its at least a little time-consuming then, I'll keep that in mind.

I think it took something like 45 minutes. If you do remove it make sure you disconnect the amp from the car wiring harness. IMO it added a huge amount of space to the trunk with it gone.

Thats not too bad. I'll keep that in mind. I'm pretty sure I don't need the amp anyways since I have an aftermarket head unit.

I just removed this pair from my Lincoln a couple of months ago. They were replacements, an upgrade. They look good and have beefy magnets, but they just fill in the bass sound, they can't handle much power before they distort.

Currently, I have a 12" Kicker in an angled, ported box that just does slide into that front area of the trunk, just behind the seats. It takes a 12" to overcome the thick padding in the rear seats and still be heard. I left the old sub holes on the deck uncovered, for more air transfer. This way, I'm not just vibrating my trunk with nowhere for the air movement created to go.

The Kicker was from Best Buy, so easy to find.

The sub box was from Amazon, here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IFED4W4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I used a hole cutting tool from Home Depot that goes onto a drill to cut a port and put in a port from another sub box I had laying around. Works well.
