I have a dumb question.

What are the black plastic pieces that are located inside of the rear wheel wells in front of the rear wheels? They are about 6 or 8 inched wide. They are screwed fast to the inside of the wheel well and appear to extend the wheel well below the underside of the body by maybe an inch. It looks like you could remove them without much trouble (in fact the end of one of mine in missing a screw and is just kind of hanging there. They appear to be factory installed (I have an 01 Sport V8). If they were behind the wheel I'd say they were some kind of built in mud/splash guard. Just curious if someone knows their function or what they are called.

Maybe they help improve air flow during smokey burnouts?

I believe they are meant to cut down on the splashing on the side of the rear bumber cover. Don't quote me on this, I am just guessing. I have seen them on other expensive cars.
