My 17 y.o. son has a 2003 LS V8. He also has some powerful sub woofers. Not only does the trunk rattle, the rear view mirror also shakes. Well, atleast it used to shake - it now hangs by 2 electronics cords between the mirror and the windshield. I assume the cords go to the rain sensor and the chromatic sensor. What broke (cracked in half) was a small diameter steel rod which connects the mirror to the windshield. I suspect that this rod has a "ball joint" on either end for mirror rotation.
My guess is that the bass vibration did it in.
Is there a source of parts for this repair short of buying a really expensive OE mirror from the dealer?

My LS rearview virbrated dramatically while driving on the test drive. I told the dealer it would need fixed for the sale, they ended up replacing the whole thing (~$300 from what the salesman had said)

I'd search on Ebay and other online sources before paying full dealer price.

Grab a mirror from a yard. The same mirror is used in Crown Vics (at least for the Gen 1s). Cost me $40.

So, the 2003 LS V8 Mirror should be the same as the Crown Vic Generation 1? (What years were the Gen 1's?) I guess the replacement must have the same 2 wires coming from it for the 2 sensers? Can I just pirate the broken post and install it on my mirror?

What Generation LS is the 2003 V8?
Are there any other Ford/ Lincoln mirrors that are the exact replacement for the 2003 LS? The dealer indicated that a new one wound be between $300 AND $400. Ouch!!

You have a gen II LS. I am not sure which other mirrors match it. If you have a large junk yard in your area, take your mirror with you (just unplug it) and see if you can match it up to one that they have. The same company makes the auto-dim mirrors for several different car brands.

If the sound broke the mirror, imagine what it is doing to your son's ears...

Taking the mirror to one of several salvage yards is a great idea, but My mirror has 2 wires attached - one simply unplugs from the mirror but the other seems to be hard wired from the mirror to a connection attached to the wind shield and I can't figure how to seperate the 2.
My guess is that the hard wired one goes to a compass and the one that unplugs goes to a rain sensor maybe?

Another question - I found a mirror from a 2005 LS on ebay - would these 2003 and 2005 mirrors be identical?

They should be.
Does anyone know if the rain sensor is somehow part of the mirror assembly, or is it separate?

Could you post a picture of this? I think the compass function is all internal to the mirror. (It is on my 04 and my 06.)

Crazy Glue is not a cure-all, especially for the 1/8" - 1/4" round post that broke in the middle, between the mirror and the windshield. (maybe duct tape?)

O.K. I figured how to remove the 2 wires attached to the mirror - one simply unplugs from the mirror, and the other leads to the windshield where the mirror sticks to. I pried off a small black plastic cover and foumd a small circuit board under the plastic. With the plastic cover removed, the circuit board and the wire came out and now I have the mirror in hand. Maybe the 2005 mirror?

ha that sounds kinda like what happened to my rearview mirror except mine stayed attached but the bass broke the auto-dimming function and now my mirror is always auto-dimmed like someone is riding behind me with the brights on all the time
