I'm looking at throwing in a new torque converter with my (soon to be picked up) 36k 4r70w. I hear the Marauder is a nice one for the price.

I'm thinking I don't want to spend more than $350 on one.

I would like to get 3.73s or 4.10s with a trac lock at some point though and a performance converter might be up my alley...

Suggestions?

I would say the Marauder unit or Mach 1 are going to be the only converters in the $350 range that are worth a damn..... you will need to change the converter regardless unless the Grand Marquis was an HPP car or an LSE because otherwise it will be a 12 inch unit.

A real performance converter is not cheap.... $500+ at the lowest, the converter I'm going to get is about $900.

+1

I have a 10.5" 3500 stall from BOC made by Circle D. About $600. If you need a new converter anyway and especially if you are paying someone labor to swap the trans it's worth the extra $300-400 over a rauder/mach unit.

See I want to get the 9.5... because if I am going to spend $600 on a converter why not spend the $300 more and get the real deal.

You could try a Dacco converter with lock up it should be around 300. I am using one in my mark now I have had no issues with it. Even with the spray I have had no problems from the converter. Mine is a 3200-3500 stall. Also have a friend running a Dacco in him rock crawler with a 700r trans behind a LT1 motor he had no problems either. Look around you will find them for sale. They aren't the best converts but they do the job fine.

I wouldn't tell you not to get the 9.5 but on a stock or bolt on car I don't think it's a necessity. With a power adder I wouldn't think twice about it.

I'm just going to spend the full amount now and not have to pay again later.... I'm looking at a little bottled power adder right now... and I want to be able to lock at WOT with no worries.

I just put an edge racing street converter with 3000k stall and it ran me about 400.00. I am happy with it along with the bauman shift kit. The car is a daily driver and has good street manners.

Then yeah your better off just going for the 9.5.

I've heard just as much bad as I have good about Edge. Haven't had any experiance myself with them but personally I'm a little leary.

my buddy has an edge unit, 7,000 miles so far with no problems but he hasn't sprayed yet.....

I'm going with Circle D, because I haven't found not even 1! bad thing about them or a failure.

Yeah I haven't heard anything bad about Circle D. Only a few thousand miles on mine but no problems and no complaints.

The marauder and mach converters are essentially the same as the mark converter. Ive heard of people buying them and having them "re-stalled". You will get a stock performing converter for 350 bucks.

Did someone say LEARY?

what is the benefits of a stall in hp sense like 40-60whp? When at a drag strip, you put it in drive hold the brake, bring the rpms up to 3k or so and TC will load (not spinning tires) but as soon as you let go of the brake itll be like dumping a clutch in a manually car at high rpms?

There is no horsepower gain from a converter... lol

It is all about increasing the efficiency of your drive train to make it work in an optimum manner for the greatest rate of acceleration.

I think he's asking what kind of power increase would feel comparable on the ass dyno... To put it in number form isn't easy, you feel it on the low end of the powerband. But to just throw a number out there, a 3000 stall would probably be somewhere in the range of 15-20whp.
