My tint on my back window is bad... it's all bubbly and I can't see out of it in the rear-view at night... does anyone know how to remove tint? The local shop wants to charge me $100 to remove it... is it worth it or should I do it myself?

If you have a wallpaper steamer, that might take it off. It's kinda messy though. I dumped in amonia, but I think the boiling point of amonia is lower than water and thus I had an interesting amonia cloud. Use eye protection and a breathing mask for fumes.

If it's that bubbly, just try to peel it off. Windex and a razor blade will get the adhesive and little tint pieces that are left over. Around here, if you get pulled over for your tint being too dark, you have to peel it off right there.

a c-note to remove the tint?!?!?! that's robbery man. lots easier to remove than to put on, and you can get your whole darn car tinted for about that price around here.
peeling it off is simple, getting the adhesive off is a PITA. just grab a corner and start pulling and it comes right off. there are plenty of removers for the adhesive, just know that it will take a lot of time (read an hour at least) to get the old adhesive off and the window clear again. DO NOT USE A RAZOR BLADE!!!!!! and be VERY careful around defroster lines. scratch those babies once and the defroster is done for. unless you know how to use a defroster repair kit.
just go slow, turn the stereo on and enjoy the rear speakers for an hour or so and you'll be just fine.

Are you contradicting my razor blade method!? I'm just kidding, it probably isn't a good idea to scrape around defroster lines. HOWEVER, a blade is the only way on regular windows.

I have done it. I would pay the $100 before doing it again. Its an akward position and hard to get in some spots. There is more to just peeling the tint, there is getting the adhesive off too while not damaging the rear defroster.

If I needed to do it again, I would definately pay the $100.

contradicting? you betcha pal, it's what i do best. nah, just teasin ya. actually a blade is a DECENT way to go about it but not the BEST way. the best way to peel AND remove old tint is to take a blade, pull up a corner and spray a releasing agent on the window/tint as you pull. the agent acts to release the tint AND keep the old adhesive wet so that it can be scraped off by the blade AFTER you have all the tint off. a good solution is to use 1 TSP dish detergent(scent of your choice, LMAO) to a whole spray bottle of water. it is the same solution ratio you use when putting the tint on. for the rear window with defroster, use a PLASTIC blade to scrape the old adhesive off. a little time, and patience will go a long way in making this job easier. PLUS you can use the hundred bucks for more "go fast/look good" parts.
hope this helps.
