Hey guys, I just bought a 2000 Lincoln LS with 81,000 miles, and it needs a new ball joint on the right side. Thanks to extensive searching of this great site, I know that I need the whole knuckle assembly. Now, my question is this- how hard is it to change this? I have done brakes, shocks, supercharger install, etc. on my old car (a firebird), so I am decent with mechanical stuff.

I guess my biggest fear is that I would need more than a jack and hand tools. Do I need to get an alignment afterwards?

A shop quoted me $280 for the install (including the part), and I am trying to decide whether or not I should do it myself.

not too difficult. I haven't done the knuckle myself but pretty much everything around it up front. I assume it's the lower? Basic disassembly/reassembly...you sound like you have plenty of knowhow. I'd give it 2 hours first time around.

you should get alignment afterwards for several reasons.

Any update ?

Riles - any update on the knuckle replacement? MY 01 LS needs the ball joint / knuckle replacement on the front right side. From what I've read on this site, the knuckle design was improved on the 03 model - some have indicated to use the '03 version of the knuckle, but I'm not sure if the 03 version will fit on the '01?

Any update/info on the procedure will be appreciated.

thanks.

Mark.
