i have a97 lsc and when the car is cold(wisconsin) the rpms are almost always higher than when the car is warm. what causes this. it seems like this in every gear, but most noticeably in third or fourth. it also seems like the car has less pep to it also when cold. I dont mean like fired it up at -20 and ran it instantly. 30 degree day and let it warm up for a minute or 2. is this normal. this tranny scares me. 47,000 on the odometer. thanks.

If you look at the FSM you'll see that Ford programs in a few cold weather strategies. First they hold idle speed up a bit until the engine warms up. This promotes faster catalyst light-off, quicker engine warm up, less chance of stalling, and smoother operation. They also program in higher shift points to allow the engine to warm up more, to warm the transmission fluid, and for smoother operation. The torque converter lockup is inhibited or delayed to also allow things to heat up first. This should only amount to a difference of a few hundred RPMs, unless you're flogging the car when cold, which is a bad thing.

Best regards,
Frank C
