i own a 1996 continental, tranny shifts hard from first 2 second wondering if any one knows what this is or how much i would be looking at to get it fixed dont know when the last tranny flush was done could it be that ? thanks

I hear bad things about tranny flushes so I dont do them. I drop the pan and chg fluid and filter. I use Mobil 1 ATF in tranny and power steering.
Brad.

Wait

Do not do the flush unless you know when the last flush was.

You risk moving around too many metal shavings and that could AND OFTEN DOES DESTROY THE TRANNY!!! Look at other posts about any trans for any car, you should never change the fluid if its old, burnt smelling, AND you don't know when the last change was.

If you want to do anything get some LUCAS tranny stabilizer fluid for around 10 bucks and put that in IF THE FLUID IS IN OR BELOW THE CROSSHATCHES on the dipstick. If the fluid is almost to the top of the crosshatches you CANNOT add more it will damage the tranny.

Look around for another trans shop too cuz any tranny specialist would know that if you dont know when the last fluid change was you just add fluid or risk ruining the trans. so this shop wants to ruin your trans and then charge you to put a new one in at around 2000 bucks to do so.

The only way you are okay to change that fluid is to have a REPUTABLE shop check it and if you have under 100,000 miles and you think the fluid was changed at least once.

If you get it changed anyways you may be okay but if its gonna go because of the change it should happern within 500 to 1000 miles after the change.

What happens is the trans has valves in it that MUST be clear of small metal shavings and stuff. If the fluid is really bad and the tranny is worn badly too, there WILL be metal in there and if you do a full flush OR T-Tech it will move those around and likely clog a valve/ vein of the tranny and this is bad.

Good Luck and I hope you get this in time!

hey thanks for replying ya i have tryd the lucas transmission fix about 2 weeks ago and shifts were good for about half hour then did the same thing started switching hard into 2nd so i think i will just change the tranny fluid and not get the flush , or is there something else i could do, thanks for the info everyone, Will

NO T-Tech

T Tech back flushes the fluid so its the worst option, if you gotta do something go to the dealer and have them do a tranny fluid change and new filter. it'll cost around 135 I think but it's the only thing you should do if you have to do something.

It's about 135 for the flush alone. It's around 240 for the premium trans service, flush and filter.

It back flushes it, lol thats hard to do since it actually just hooks to the in/out and the car itself pumps its old fluid out as new is drawn in. Also as for doing a pan drop that gets maybe 40% of the fluid, unless you also do the torque converter. As for having the dealer do a change many do a t-tech type change which a 99.etc% fluid change (all F/L/M in my area do). I have heard some people say the problem with shifting after a change is due to the computer being used to the compensating for fluid that isn't as slippery as new. Taking the negative off the bat for 1/2 hour and driving conservatively while it relearns the subtle changes it does during shifting can help. BTW I changed the fluid on my last 3 cars 93 crown vic at 80K, 98 TC at 70K and and 97 conti at 80K. No problems on any except that they all shifted smoother for the 3 years after the fluid was changed that I owned the cars.

Just Callin em like I sees um

Yeah I may be wrong about the backflush part of t tec. But the rest of the stuff I said is common knowledge to those who know about transmissions.

Perhaps Purelux has been LUCKY (ha ha) and has not had problems after changing the fluid, but seriously, go to any two or three forums (or call a couple shops and ask) for any car, and read about transmission questions. If they have done their research they will say the same thing as I have.

I am not a mechanic and I don't claim to be the smartest person out here but I do my research. And this info is what I've found.

Just tryin' to save somebody 2000 dollars.

P.S. Purelux, at 80k on the Conti, was that the first time it was ever changed?

Never, we have the main records before that. And there has been 30k since that change. Thats alot of luck maybe I should have just repeated what I read about it instead of providing what I actually did and the results. BTW my friends 92 civic honda with 140K and hyundai at 90 were lucky too (both still running well 2 years later). I better go tell the transmissions to stop shifting correctly.

Douche

C'mon man thats great for you but I'm telling you you got lucky. Sure you gave a results based answer, I am giving technical-statistical advice. If you look around and actually see what has happened to other people on this forum alone you will see what can happen. As I said earlier I am just trying to save the guy from trashing his transmission. Whatever happens I hope the OP checks out both of our stories.

BTW don't be a douche.

Peace People Prevail.

"Be a douche" wow i thought potty talk was best left to children. Btw theoretical is great but not everything on paper works that way in actuality. Also you could still add lucas or something similar if the level was full if you syphoned out that amount through the dipstick. In addition remenber to check the level after the fluid is up to temp or the reading can be off.
