Rumsfeld disputes link to Iraq war

LOS ANGELES – Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Thursday rejected as “nonsense” the notion that recent terrorist attacks in London were retaliation for the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

“Some people seem confused about the motivations and intentions of terrorists and about our coalition’s defense of the still young democracies in Afghanistan and Iraq,” Rumsfeld said in a speech to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council.

“They seem to cling to the discredited theory that the recent attacks in London and elsewhere, for example, are really in retaliation for the war in Iraq or for the so-called occupation of Afghanistan,” he added. “That is nonsense.”

In a videotape broadcast earlier Thursday, the second-in-command for the al-Qaida terrorist network, Ayman al-Zawahri, threatened more destruction in London, saying that British Prime Minister Tony Blair would be to blame.

Al-Zawahri also threatened the United States with tens of thousands of military dead if it does not withdraw its troops from Iraq immediately.

In his speech, Rumsfeld reiterated his oft-stated assertion that Syria is helping the insurgency in Iraq. He said it is acting as a haven for Baathist former members of the Saddam Hussein regime who fled Baghdad after the U.S. invasion, and allowing insurgents to cross its border with Iraq. He said the Syrians are making a mistake.

“What they’re doing is harmful ultimately to themselves,” he said. “They’re going to have to live in that neighborhood, and Iraq doesn’t like what Syria is doing. And Iraq is going to be in that neighborhood for a very long time and it’s a bigger country and it will be a more powerful country.”

Rumsfeld, meanwhile, paid tribute to the 21 Marines killed this week in Iraq, including the 14 killed Wednesday by a single roadside bomb near the city of Haditha in western Iraq.

“Patriots, they were determined to stop the terrorists from reclaiming Iraq and from launching more attacks on our people,” he said. “Our nation needed them, called on them in battle, and mourns them now in death.”

Rumsfeld spoke broadly about President Bush’s rationale for fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan – “the only way to defeat terrorism is to go after them where they are” – but said little about the administration’s plan for turning over the security mission in Iraq to the Iraqis.

Gee, the head of Al-Quida threatens more attacks, ON VIDEO, in retalliation for the US occupation (or whatever the fluck you want to call it) of Iraq, and Rumsfeld doesn't believe it? I can already see the headlines full of the BuSh administration excuses following the next attack, "Tired of swatting flies", "Flawed intelligence", "No specifics were given".

Again, they are using that as an excuse to attack us. They would be attacking us anyways. HELLO 9/11!!!! Oh and don't forget that they've been bombing people for countless years now. And how easy is it for you to knock us down in our arguments?? You've started a number of threads as of late, and have left each one when we prove you wrong!!! And you said you had no time to comment on our arguments?? But you have time to keep filling this website with stuff not fit for my toilet!!! dealing with these guys is similar to working wit imaginary nubers in algebra. In order to get the square of a negative you have to first make a imaginary complex or real number.

I get the sense that they do not know what t believe in ad keep gravitating to these aticles whihc must be advertisd on air america or something and once they realize it is anothe loosing propsition they contact the mothership for additional directions.

Iam curious if any one has stistics on how many times a person could loose. There has to be an end somewhere or can they just keep loosing into infinity.

Maybe these guys are bots and all this stuff is scripted.

This makes aabout as much sense as saying a cancer patient got cancer becasue they were treating a cancer illness.

Terrorism is what is and they are hell bent on carrying out their objectve regardless where we have boots on the ground. Sure as hell did stop em from carrying out the 9/11 homicide attacks. But you would probably agrue for the terrorist that we had aircraft in the UN directed no fly zone so OBL had every right to kill innocent citizens.

Yeah like I said before they are full of empty calories an we really should cut down on our consumption.
