I just bought a 99 Eldo with about 63 k miles down.

The mechanic at Walmart said the tailpipe and catalyst converter looked rusted and would soon need to be replaced.

What's a reasonable price to expect for parts and labor and do the tips also come as squares? Where would I get an exhaust system with square tips?

Also, would it make sense to give the undercarriage a rust prevention treatment or is it too late at this point as the car is already 7+ years old?

As far as your exhaust $$$ maybe CadillacETC1997 would want to chime in here because he fabricates exhausts as I have yet to install my catback system. If you can find someone with a mandrel bender they can make you a custom exaust. My guy gave me a qoute of $180 to fabricate but I will have to bring whatever mufflers I want installed. Depending on the mufflers I pretty much estimate just about under $400. I just hope I can get some Magnaflows or Dynomax's for a good price. Corsa would be my first choice but the costs outway the purpose.

Actually I just wanted a new factory version. I'll settle for the ordinary round tips that are on there now, I just thought that since I have to get a new exhaust system anyway I might just get square tips along with it.

Do I have to go to the Cadillac dealer for this or is this something that can simply be done at a place like Midas or a Sears Autocenter?

I hate going to dealers because many of them just want to sell you a new car (without even knowing the first thing about the cars they are selling), after-sales service sucks sometimes... Besides, dealers always try to clean you out.

if u dont want anything special then just take it to midas they will hook you up a waste considering how much youll pay when you could have a MUCH nicer and more power but to each his own...

If you want a new factory exhaust get down to the local junkyard. A you-pull-it yard would be cheapest, and it's quite easy to remove/install the exhaust system yourself. If you're getting a new exhaust bent you may as well get a decent one, if you want it pretty quiet run a resonator and some 'super turbo' mufflers.
