Do these cars ever rust? where are the problem areas? how do you avoid it? i hate rust dont want it to start at all? i live in mn and the salt in the winter is really bad you could have a black car and it would look white in one day...

I don't think I have any rust problems yet, but my 2000 has major issues with the trunk lid. The aluminum of the deck lid has reacted with the iron key assembly, causing bad paint blistering, which has since flaked off showing white aluminum where black paint should have been.

Looks really sharp on a 5 year old luxury car.

Bottom line, the car is still made of steel, which will rust out eventually. But with frequent washings and yearly undercoating - it'll be like most cars and look great well over 10 years old.

i dont have any rust but dont want to get any? so i wax and was the sucker at least once a week. lots of work but still fun in some sick kind of way. lol what is this under coating that you are talking about is it a yearly thing? thanks, Mac

00 113k miles garaged when home and I have no rust but the love bugs have etched away small spots of paint.

Waxing the car once a week sounds like a good thing, but you can over do it.

I once waxed the paint off of my 79 TA years ago because I waxed it every week. The corners and edges are the first to go. Waxing every month or two should be plenty. I usually wax when I notice the water not beading up like I want it to. I have never had any trouble with the finish on my cars when I follow this schedule.

Maybe the newer waxes are gentler, but you are still rubbing the paint every week if you aredoing any serious waxing.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
