It is getting cooler and my baby wants me to turn the key two times each about 20 turns to crank, well not this year. I involved a fuel pressure gauge this time. As I turn to "on" I get a jump to between 60 and 70 but it immediately drops to zero. Does not hold pressure. Sounds under normal circumstances a pressure regulator problem but since we have none, thoughts?

Failing fuel pump, worn battery. Luckily the fuel pump on the LS can be replaced by pulling the back seat bottom and doesn't require dropping the tank. Carter, Delphi or Motorcraft are the only pumps I would trust. Avoid Airtex unless you wish to make fuel pump swapping a career. Just bought a new Motorcraft battery from my Lincoln dealer, cost 130 bucks out the door to give you an idea on battery price.

I'd wait for a few more to chime in though. I don't know all the LS weirdness, so there may be a snargenfrazzle switch in there somewhere that causes hard starts when it goes out.

Sounds like it may be the check valve in one of the two fuel pump assemblies.

sounds right to me actually, but I'm not a mechanic and only worked one fuel pump in my time. From what I know, when you turn the key, the pump will initially pressurize the fuel rail for start and shut off.

Is there a test that I could perform that might help narrow this down?

Changing the fuel filter is a good idea, but it won't help with this.
The only test that I know of is the one that you have already done.
